CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR JANUARY 15, 2003

    WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Shooting woes and missed opportunities proved to be Calvin’s undoing Wednesday
night at the Calvin Fieldhouse as the Knights suffered a disappointing 57-49
    defeat to Albion.

    Calvin (10-4 overall, 1-2 MIAA} struggled through a season-low 30.4 percent
shooting performance overall including just 28.6 percent in the second half.

Albion (9-5 overall, 2-1 MIAA} shot just 35.1 percent overall and just 26.9
percent in the second half but the Britons received 24 points from sophomore
guard Sarah Caskey while also outrebounding Calvin 44-39.

With the score tied 23-23 with just over four minutes left in the half, Calvin
failed to corral a missed Albion shot. The Britons snared the offensive rebound
and quickly penalized the Knights as sophomore guard Vanessa Thompson drilled a
three-point shot from the left wing. The Thompson triple ignited a 9-2 Albion
run to close out the half as the Britons took a 32-25 lead into the lockerroom.

Trailing 36-29 early in the second half, Calvin came up with back-to-back steals
but missed open layups on both transition opportunities. Albion then proceeded
to rip off a 13-2 scoring run with Caskey and sophomore Angie Spain combining
for four points apiece in the run.

Calvin did battle back, using an 18-3 scoring run to close to within five at
52-47 with 1:40 left on the clock. Junior Kim Wolthuis (South Christian High
School) scored nine of Calvin’s 18 points in the spurt including a jumper with
1:40 left that brought the Knights to within five.

Trailing 54-49 with 1:22 remaining, Calvin was unable to capitalize on a missed
Albion free throw on the front end of a bonus opportunity as the Britons snared
the offensive carom. Albion then swished a pair of charity tosses to lead 56-49
and moments later, Calvin failed to rebound another Albion miss at the free
throw line, sealing the win for the Britons.

Calvin was led in defeat by Wolthuis who picked up 18 points and three steals
while junior center Andrea MacDonald (Allendale HS) just missed a triple-double
as she recorded 10 points, 13 rebounds and eight blocked shots. The performance
by MacDonald marked her fourth double-double of the season and the fifth of her
career. Senior Tricia Dyk (Western Michigan Christian HS} also had 1 points for
Calvin with sophomore Rita Ouwinga (McBain Christian HS} chipping in with eight
    points.

In addition to the 24 points from Caskey, Albion received eight points apiece
from sophomore Angie Spain and Sarah Enfield.

Albion was 16-of-21 (.762} at the free throw line while Calvin was 11-of-16
    (.688} at the charity stripe.

Calvin must now prepare for a Saturday contest at rival Hope. Saturday’s game
against the nationally-ranked Flying Dutch is scheduled to begin at 3:00 p.m. at
    the Hope Dow Center.

    MEN’S BASKETBALL

ALBION–Calvin received its first taste of league defeat on Wednesday evening at
the hands of a hot-shooting Albion College team, 76-64. The Knights drop to 9-6
overall and 2-1 in the MIAA while Albion lifts its record to 13-2 overall and
    3-0 in the conference.

It was Calvin who came out hot in the first two minutes, hitting its first four
shots and building up an 8-2 lead in front of a hostile Kresge Gymnasium crowd.
The host Britons would answer, however, with an impressive 31-4 run of its own
to take a commanding 33-12 lead with 8:26 left in the first half on a layup by
guard Michael Thomas. With things looking bleak for the Knights, they stayed
composed and rattled off an 18-6 run that brought the Briton lead to single
digits at 39-30 going into halftime.

Calvin stormed out of the locker room after halftime and pounded out another 9-3
run, this one getting it to as close as three points at 42-39 with 16:27
remaining in regulation. The Britons were relentless with their barrage of
three-balls that fell from everywhere on the court. The one that broke the back
of the Knights was delivered by Brett Quayle at the 1:27 mark in the second
half. After Calvin had scored a bucket in the paint from senior Rob Dykstra
(Tri-Unity Christian) to pull within four at 65-61, Quayle pulled up, with the
shot clock running down, and sent Kresge into a frenzy by hitting his sixth
three-ball of the night. Albion would make good on its last eight free-throw
attempts inside of 1:08 and put the game on ice, 76-64.

Quayle finished with 23 points, including 8-13 shooting from the floor and 6 of
10 from behind the three-point line. Completing the Albion backcourt was
sophomore guard Michael Thomas who tossed in 24 points, including 9-18 from the
floor and 4 of 8 from three-point land. He also dished out six assists.

Leading the way for the Knights was senior Jeremy Veenstra (Kalamazoo
Christian), tallying 19 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. Junior guard Kevin
Broene (Grand Rapids Christian) was next with 12 points and six rebounds.
Dykstra checked in with seven points and eight rebounds.

Calvin outrebounded Albion 39-35, marking the first time the Knights have
achieved this feat and also tallied a loss. The Britons shot 27 of 54 from the
field for the game, good enough for 50 percent, while also finding the mark on
    46.2 percent (12-26) of their three-pointers.

Calvin will return to action at the Fieldhouse on Saturday, January 18 for a
conference showdown with Hope College. For more information of the game, which
