WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
A frigid shooting performance doomed Calvin in the first round of its own
tournament Friday night as it suffered a 52-45 defeat to Tri-State University at
the Calvin Fieldhouse. Tri-State advances to Saturday's championship game at
3:00 p.m. where it will face Wittenberg (OH) which upset nationally-ranked
(12th) Case Western Reserve 69-55 in Friday's other first round game.
Calvin will face Case Western Reserve in the consolation game at 1:00 p.m.
Saturday at the Calvin Fieldhouse.
In its loss to Tri-State, Calvin suffered through a 24.1 percent shooting
performance in the first half as the Knights trailed 26-15 at halftime. Calvin
mounted a 9-0 charge in the opening four minutes of the second half, closing to
within 26-24 on a layup by junior Andrea MacDonald (Allendale HS) with 16:06
remaining. Tri-State responded out a timeout moments later with a three-point
shot by Brittany Miller to boost its lead to 29-24. Calvin would get no closer
the rest of the way as the visiting Thunder (3-6) used a 12-4 run inside the
final 10 minutes of the game to pull away for the win.
Calvin (4-2) shot just 31.0 percent overall (18-of-58) and also connected on
just 46.2 percent (6-of-13) of its free throw attempts. Tri-State shot 36.5
percent from the field (19-of-52) but also hit 13-of-18 attempts at the charity
stripe for a 72.7 percent free throw clip.
Calvin senior Tricia Dyk (Western Michigan Christian HS) led all scorers with
15 points while also collecting four steals. McDonald added seven points and 10
rebounds while senior Emily Beard (Southfield Christian HS) picked up a
career-high 17 rebounds. Sophomore guard Kristen McDonald (West Catholic HS)
chipped in with nine points.
Tri-State was led by Ann Miller who collected 13 points and eight rebounds
while Krista Brockway had 12 points. Nikki Bergman added nine points and 11
rebounds for the Thunder.
Calvin finished with a 48-34 rebounding advantage but committed 22 turnovers
while Tri-State had just 13 turnovers.
