    CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR NOV. 26, 2002

    MEN'S BASKETBALL

    Heading into Tuesday night, the last two meetings between Calvin and Ferris
    State had resulted in double digit Calvin victories. When Tuesday night's
    game between Calvin and Ferris State at the Jim Wink Arena in Big Rapids was
    completed, the tables had been turned as the Bulldogs were victorious in
    convincing fashion by a 92-71 score.

    Playing under the direction of former Calvin standout Bill Sall, the Bulldogs
    took control of the game midway through the first half scoring nine unanswered
    points to take a 22-14 lead. The first nine minutes of the game featured eight
    lead changes but the nine-point surge by Ferris State proved to be the beginning
    of the end for Calvin as Ferris State outscored Calvin 37-10 over the final 11
    minutes of the first half.

    Freshman point guard Dennis Springs put the exclamation point on the first half
    performance for Ferris State as he tossed in a 35-foot heave at the buzzer,
    giving the Bulldogs a 50-24 lead at the break.

    In the second half, Ferris State led by as many as 30 points before Calvin
    closed out the game with an 11-2 run to cut the final deficit to 21 points.

    A 5-6 guard from Toledo, Springs put on a dynamic performance for the crowd of
    651 fans as he collected a triple-double with 16 points, 13 assists and 10
    rebounds. Springs was one of five Ferris State players to reach double-digits
    in scoring with sophomore guard Carlton Epps leading the Bulldogs with 19
    points. Calvin was paced by junior forward Chris Prins (Escondido, CA) who
    collected a game-high 22 points while junior guard Kevin Broene (Grand Rapids
    Christian HS) added 11 points.

    A cat-quick defensive effort by the Bulldogs held the Knights to just 32.3
    percent field goal shooting in the first half. Calvin recovered to shoot 58.6
    percent in the second half to finish with a 45.0 percent field goal clip
    overall.

    Ferris State (2-0) shot 45.5 percent overall including 55.0 percent in the
    second half. Ferris owned a commanding rebounding edge, ouboarding Calvin 43-31
    including 19-10 on the offensive glass. Calvin also committed 21 turnovers on
    the evening.

    Calvin returns to action on Friday when it faces Wisconsin-Eau Claire at 6:00
    p.m. in a first round game of the Rochester Thanksgiving Tournament. The game
    will feature a rematch of the 2000 NCAA III Championship game which Calvin won
    79-74. Wisconsin-Eau Claire will carry a 3-0 record into the weekend
    tournament. Host Rochester is also 3-0 with 2-1 Johns Hopkins filling out the
    other spot in the tournament. Rochester will face Johns Hopkins Friday at 8:00
    p.m. The championship game is set for Saturday at 3:00 p.m. with the
    consolation slated to tip off at 1:00 p.m. at Rochester's Palestra Arena.

    WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

    WINONA LAKE, IN - Calvin is off to its best start since the 1997-98 season
    after a 73-64 victory at Grace (IN) Tuesday night. Calvin (3-0) led 34-30 at
    halftime but then saw the host Lancer creep to within a point at 46-45 with
    11:57 left to play. Sophomore guard Kristen McDonald (West Catholic HS) stepped
    up for the Knights however and broke the game open with back-to-back-to-back
    three-pointers in a span of less than two minutes to give the Knights a
    commanding 55-45 lead with 10:10 left. Calvin then stretched its advantage to
    13 points at 58-45 with 8:15 remaining on a free throw by senior guard Tricia
    Dyk (Western Michigan Christian HS). Grace would get no closer than seven
    points the rest of the way as the Knights continued on for the win.

    McDonald led the Calvin scoring attack with 14 points while also dishing out
    four assists. Senior center Emily Beard (Southfield Christian HS) was also
    strong with 10 points and 12 rebounds. Junior Kim Wolthuis (South Christian HS)
    followed with 11 points and three assists while Dyk collected 12 points, five
    rebounds and two steals. Sophomores Rita Ouwinga (McBain Christian HS) and Kara
    Kuipers (Unity Christian HS) chipped in with nine points apiece. Sophomore Lisa
    Nanninga was also impressive with 11 rebounds off the bench.

    Calvin outrebounded Grace 47-32 and forced the Lancers into 18 turnovers.
    Calvin also connected on 16-of-22 free throw attempts for a 72.7 percent free
    throw clip.

    Calvin returns to action on Friday when it hosts Aquinas at 5:00 p.m. in the
    first round of the Calvin Thanksgiving Tournament. Hope and Cornerstone will
    meet in the initial first round game at 3:00 p.m. The championship game is
    scheduled for Saturday at 3:00 p.m. with the consolation scheduled to begin at
    1:00 p.m. All four games will be held at the Calvin Fieldhouse.
