CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR November 23, 2002
MEN'S BASKETBALL
After seeing a 45-game double-figure scoring streak come to end in a 96-67
victory over Grace Bible College Friday night, Calvin senior Jeremy Veenstra
wasted little time in getting a new streak underway. In a matchup of pre-season
nationally-ranked teams, 15th-ranked Calvin topped 16th-ranked Brockport State
(NY) 93-77 behind a 24-point, 10-rebound effort from Veenstra.
The performance marked the 24th double-double of Veenstra's career and enabled
him to claim tournament MVP honors of the Calvin Tip-Off for the second straight
year.
A pre-season D3hoops.com All-American, Veenstra was one of four Calvin players
to reach double-digits in scoring with junior guard Kevin Broene leading the
Knights with 27 points including a 10-for-10 performance at the free throw line.
Junior forward Chris Prins picked up 15 points and joined Broene and Veenstra
on the all-tournament team while Calvin senior Rob Dykstra chipped in with 11
points in the championship tilt.
Calvin (2-0) finished the game with a sizzling 27-for-30 (90 percent)
performance at the free throw line which included hitting all of its final 25
attempts at the charity stripe.
Brockport State (1-1) was led by D3hoops.com pre-season All-American Mike
Medbury with popped in 15 points while Brandon Mills had 13 points and nine
rebounds with Randy Bills adding 11 points and Orlando Nazario 10 points.
Calvin held a slim 37-32 halftime lead but opened the second half with a 9-2
run to build a 46-34 advantage. Calvin would later build a 66-49 lead on a
jumper from junior center Ryan Smalligan with 9:14 remaining but Brockport State
answered with a 12-2 run to close to within 68-61 with 5:27 left on the clock.
The Golden Eagles had a golden opportunity to cut the gap to five points moments
later but a layup attempt by Kellan Skrine was blocked by Veenstra and then
converted in a fast-break bucket by Calvin junior point guard Josh Berghuis to
put the Knights up by nine.
Brockport State would get no closer than seven points the rest of the way as
Calvin pulled away for the win.
Calvin finished with a 46.2 percent shooting clip including a blistering 68.2
percent clip in the second half as the Knights connected on 15-of-22 second half
shots. Brockport State finished with a 43.1 percent shooting percentage
including 46.2 percent in the second half.
Calvin held a 20-point advantage at the free throw line as Brockport State was
seven-of-nine at the charity stripe. Calvin also held a 40-33 rebounding edge.
Calvin returns to action on Tuesday night when it travels to Division II Ferris
State University to face the Bulldogs who are led by former Calvin All-American
and MIAA MVP Bill Sall. Tuesday's game at the new Jim Wink Arena will begin at
7:30 p.m.
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
A hard-fought battle resulted in a hard-fought victory for the Calvin women's
basketball team Saturday afternoon as the Knights held off host Carnegie Mellon
74-70 at the Carnegie Mellon Tipoff Tournament in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
Calvin sophomore guard Rita Ouwinga (McBain Christian HS) had a breakout game
for the Knights, scoring a career-high 19 points as she connected on 7-of-12
attempts from the field along with a 4-for-4 performance at the free throw line.
In addition, Ouwinga picked up six rebounds and one assist.
Senior Emily Beard (Southfield Christian HS) and junior Kim Wolthuis (South
Christian HS) were next with 10 points apiece for the Knights while junior
center Andrea MacDonald (Allendale HS) and senior point guard Tricia Dyk
(Western Michigan Christian HS) added nine points apiece.
Sophomore center Kara Kuipers (Unity Christian HS) also sparkled in a reserve
roll, adding a career-high seven points and six rebounds in just 11 minutes of
action. A pair of free throws by Kuipers allowed the Knights to take a 58-56
lead with just over six minutes remaining. After Carnegie Mellon came back to
knot the score at 60-60, Ouwinga responded with three-point play inside to put
the Knights up 65-60. Beard then canned a jumper on a pass from Dyk to put the
maroon and gold up 65-60 and another pair of free throws from Kuipers moments
later gave the Knights a seven-point lead.
Carnegie Mellon then closed to within 70-68 with 35 seconds remaining buta
clutch three-point play by Wolthuis gave the Knights a five point lead that
would prove to be too big a differential for Carnegie Mellon to overcome.
Calvin finished with a 48.0 percent field goal shooting performance (24-of-50)
while also connecting on 79.3 percent (23-of-29) of its attempts from the free
throw line. Calvin also held a 35-29 rebounding advantage. Carnegie Mellon was
led by 6-2 center Erin Brady who scored 22 points before fouling out in the
second half.
Beard was named the tournament MVP and was joined on the all tournament team
from Calvin by Tricia Dyk.
Calvin returns to action on Tuesday when it journeys to Winona Lake, Indiana
where the Knights will take on Grace College in a game scheduled to begin at
6:00 p.m.
