Joel Veldhouse Named MIAA MVP IN Men's Soccer
Three Calvin Players Named to All-MIAA 1st Team

GRAND RAPIDS, MI -- For the second time in three years, a member of the Calvin
men's soccer team has been named the MIAA's Most Valuable Player. Calvin
forward Joel Veldhouse has been named the MIAA's 2002 MVP, becoming the ninth
individual from Calvin to receive the award. Marcus Byeman had been the last
Calvin player to be named MIAA MVP, receiving the award in 2000. Collectively,
Calvin has had one of its men's soccer players receive the MIAA MVP award 15
    times.

This past fall, Veldhouse led the MIAA in scoring with 24 points in conference
play on the strength of 10 goals and four assists, becoming the first Calvin
player since Barone in 1991 to lead the MIAA in total points. A junior
academically and a sophomore in athletic eligibility, Veldhouse hails from Sioux
Falls, South Dakota and is a graduate of Sioux Falls Christian High School.
Veldhouse transferred to Calvin this fall after spending the previous two years
at Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska. The impact by Veldhouse was
immediate as he finished the season with 17 goals and eight assists to lead the
Knights in scoring. Three of his goals were game-winners. He was also selected
MIAA Offensive Player of the Week twice during the year.

In addition, Veldhouse was named to the All-MIAA 1st team. He is joined on the
All-MIAA 1st team by teammates Joel Vande Kopple and Kurt Visker. Vande Kopple
and Visker are both natives of Grand Rapids and graduates of Grand Rapids
Christian High School. A sophomore midfielder, Vande Kopple scored three goals
and picked up three assists this fall including three goals and two assists in
MIAA games. Visker is a freshman sweeper back who collected three goals and one
assist with all three of his goals coming in conference action. Visker and
Vande Kopple both received MIAA Defensive Player of the Week accolades during
    the year.

Calvin junior defender Mike Standfest also received honorable mention
recognition from the MIAA coaches. A three-year starter in the Calvin defensive
backfield, Standfest is from Elk Rapids and is a graduate of Elk Rapids High
School. Standfest scored two goals and picked up two assists during the
    season.

Under the direction of first-year head coach Chris Hughes, Calvin finished its
2002 campaign with an 11-8-1 record that allowed the Knights to reach the
double-digit plateau in victories for the fifth straight year and for the 26th
time in school history. The Knights also recorded a 6-5-1 mark in the MIAA
which was good for a fourth place conference finish.
