CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR October 22, 2002
MEN’S SOCCER
Grand Rapids – Calvin’s men’s soccer (10-6-1, 5-4-1 MIAA) invited Alma (8-7-1, 6-2-1 MIAA) to Grand Rapids, Michigan for their second meeting in MIAA league play. Neither team was able to score throughout the 110 minutes of action, which resulted in a 0-0 tie.
The first half was controlled by the Scots as they took four shots to Calvin’s two. Senior goalkeeper Justin Bouw (Unity Christian) stopped two shot in the period. The second half was pushed by the Knights in their attempting five shots on goal to Alma’s two, a couple of which rolled just wide of the net. The game got tough down the stretch as Calvin and Alma combined for 22 fouls in the second half alone. The two overtime periods were dominated by Calvin, who took seven shots to Alma’s one. Each team had a goal called back in the second overtime because of offside calls.
Sophomore Joel Veldhouse (Sioux Falls Christian) led the Knight’s attack with four shots and was followed by sophomore Dave DeBoer (Western Michigan Christian) who ripped three at the net. The Knights were also held in the game by great defensive play by freshman Kurt Visker (Grand Rapids Christian) in the center defensive position.
The Knights will be back in action this Saturday, October 22nd, as they travel to meet the Olivet Comets. The game is set to start at 1:30 p.m.
WOMEN’S SOCCER
Alma – The women’s soccer team (9-5-2, 6-3-2 MIAA) traveled to Alma (9-7-1, 4-6-1 MIAA) for their second MIAA match up with the Scots. After a 1-1 halftime score, the Knights were able to come out victorious with a 3-1 score.
The first half showed the Knights opening the scoring as senior Stephanie Kooima (Unity Christian) scored off a pass from freshman Karla Van Beveren (Hamilton District Christian) in the 20th minute. Alma soon responded with one of their own when Megan Karchon scored off a double assist in the 23rd minute.
The second half proved to be the breaking point for Alma when senior Tricia Dyk (Western Michigan Christian) added to her team lead with goals in the 51st and 87th minutes. Her first was assisted by senior Lindy VanHaitsma (Grand Rapids Christian) and the second was from a corner kick by junior Sarah Derrico (Canon McMillan).
Leah Vander Ploeg (Unity Christian) protected the Knights goal for the evening while blocking eight shots.
The Knights will host the Olivet Comets this Saturday, October 22nd, at Calvin Field. The game is slated for a 12:00 start, with the internet broadcast beginning about fifteen minutes before.
VOLLEYBALL
Albion – Volleyball traveled to meet the Albion Britons in the final stretch of the MIAA league matches. The Knights came out successful with a 30-25, 30-15, 30-17 victory to bump their record up to 19-6 and 10-2 in the MIAA.
The Knight’s offense was sparked by senior Cassie Christopher (Fruitport) who had 18 kills. She was followed by senior Melissa Pell (Fremont) who had 13. Pell also added to the team’s effort with eight blocks, three of which were solo.
Sophomore Kara Kuipers (Unity Christian) had a big day serving with three aces along with Christopher and senior Jessica Huisjen (Lansing Christian) who each had two.
Senior Laura Tucker (Holland Christian) had 45 assists in the three-game match and was helped by sophomore Trisha Balkema (Illiana Christian) who had 27 digs.
The Knights host Calvin’s Midwest Invitational this weekend on Friday and Saturday, with action starting at 3:00 p.m. Friday. Calvin’s next MIAA match up comes in one week when they travel to Indiana for their second meeting with St. Mary’s. That match will start at 7:00 p.m.
