CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR TUESDAY, OCTOBER 8, 2002

    WOMEN'S SOCCER

Calvin continued to ride the hot scoring foot of senior forward Tricia Dyk as
the Knights picked up a 5-2 victory over visiting Kalamazoo College Tuesday
afternoon at Calvin Field. A native of Grand Haven and a graduate of Western
Michigan Christian High School, Dyk picked up three goals and assisted on
another in Tuesday's victory which allowed the Knights to remain one point
    behind league-leading Hope (6-1-0 MIAA) which handed St. Mary's a 2-0 defeat
Tuesday. Calvin (8-3-1 overall, 5-1-1 MIAA) also remained one point ahead of
third place Albion (5-2-0) which defeated Alma 3-0 Tuesday.

Dyk's performance against Kalamazoo marked her 22nd career multiple-goal match
as well as her sixth career hat-trick. It also raised her season totals to 14
goals, 10 assists and 38 points and her career totals to 70 goals, 36 assists
and 176 points. Dyk is second on the Calvin career list in goals and points and
third in assists. She also raised her MIAA totals to 52 goals, 28 assists and
    132 points. She is now tied for third place on the MIAA career list for goals;
tied for fourth in points and tied for sixth in assists.

Dyk set up Calvin's first goal Tuesday with a crossing pass in the box that
junior forward Becky Welsh (Delaware, OH) was able to boot into the net for his
second goal of the year. The Welsh goal came in the 16th minute of play. Less
than four minutes later, Dyk put Calvin up 2-0 as she collected a chip pass from
senior Heather VanVugt (Brookfield, WI) and slid a shot underneath the Kalamazoo
    goaltender.

Trailing 2-0 at halftime, Kalamazoo came back with a goal by Molly Danner less
than three minutes into the second half to cut the deficit in half but Calvin
answered with a pair of goals by Dyk in a one-minute span. Both goals were set
up on well executed passes from freshman Noell Berghuis (Unity Christian HS).
Dyk put Calvin up 3-1 in the 50th minute and turned another pass from Berghuis
into a goal 56 seconds later to give the Knights a 4-1 advantage.

Danner scored her second goal of the game in the 60th minute to close the gap
to 4-2 but the Knights were able to close out the win on a goal by senior Lindy
VanHaitsma with less than 10 minutes remaining. The goal by VanHaitsma came on
a penalty kick and was her second goal of the season.

Calvin outshot Kalamazoo 20-17 with senior goaltender Leah VanderPloeg (Unity
Christian HS) collecting seven saves in between the pipes for Calvin.
Kalamazoo's Elizabeth Dodson picked up five saves in goal.

Calvin will now prepare to host Hope Saturday at noon in a first place MIAA
    showdown at Calvin Field.
