CALVIN SPORTS REPORT PART TWO FOR OCTOBER 1, 2002
MEN'S BASKETBALL
Although the first practice date of the upcoming 2002-2003 NCAA III basketball
season is still two weeks away, the Calvin men's basketball team has already
received national recognition.
In the recently released Street & Smith's College Basketball 2002 preview
magazine, Calvin is ranked 10th in a pre-season Division III poll. In addition,
Calvin senior Jeremy Veenstra has been named a pre-season second team
All-American.
A year ago, Calvin captured its fourth straight MIAA championship and reached
the 20-win plateau for the 12th time in school history by finishing 20-7 overall
and 9-3 in the MIAA. Veenstra was named the MIAA's Most Valuable Player for the
second straight year and received post-season All-America recognition from the
National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC), Basketball Times, DIII News
and D3hoops.com. Veenstra is one of five returning starters for the upcoming
season.
Calvin is one of two teams from the MIAA named to Street and Smith's pre-season
Top-10 poll as Hope is ranked seventh. The MIAA is one of two conferences to
have two of its members receive Top-10 rankings as Wisconsin-Oshkosh and
Wisconsin-Stevens Point of the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference
(WIAC) are ranked second and ninth respectively.
Rochester of New York is ranked number-one. Calvin is scheduled to compete in a
tournament hosted by Rochester Thanksgiving Weekend that will also include teams
from Wisconsin-Eau Claire and Johns Hopkins. A year ago, Rochester reached the
NCAA III Final Four. The Yellow Jackets return all five starters this year.
Joining Veenstra on the pre-season All-America second team are Jeff Joss of
Rochester and Mike Medbury of Brockport State. Brockport State is scheduled to
compete in Calvin's Tip-Off Tourney November 22 and 23.
Named to the pre-season honorable mention All-America list from the MIAA is Hope
senior Don Overbeek. In the NCAA II pre-season All-America list, Ferris State
senior Adam Anderson is listed as an honorable mention All-America selection.
Calvin is scheduled to travel to Ferris State on November 26. Ferris State is
coached by former Calvin All-American Bill Sall.
Calvin will open its season on November 22 when it faces Grace Bible College in
the second game of the Calvin Tip-Off Tourney. Brockport State will meet
Dominican College in the first game.
