    CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR WEDNESDAY, SEPT. 25, 2002

    MEN'S GOLF

    Calvin's hot string continued as the Knights came up with another strong MIAA
    outing Wednesday afternoon. Competing at fourth MIAA tournament of the year,
    Calvin finished second with a team score of 308 strokes. The tournament was
    hosted by Kalamazoo at the Indian Run Golf Club.

    Olivet took first place team honors with a score of 300 with Calvi finishing one
    stroke ahead of third place Albion and three strokes ahead of fourth place Alma.

    In the overall team standings, Calvin remains in fourth place but now trails
    third place Alma by just three strokes and second place Hope by just 25 strokes.

    Four Calvin golfers fired sub-80 rounds Wednesday with senior Tony Karsten
    (Holland Christian HS) and sophomore Mike Bratt (Lynden, WA) leading the Knights
    with rounds of 75 that placed them in a five-way tie for sixth place Wednesday
    afternoon. Juniors Ryan Brandsma (Hinsdale, IL) and Matt Kelly (Western
    Michigan Christian HS) were next for Calvin with scores of 79. Junior Phil
    Rietema (Grand Rapids Baptist) was Calvin's fifth man with a score of 85.

    John Matthews of Adrian captured medalist honors Wednesday with a round of 72.

    Karsten is now tied for sixth in the MIAA individual standings wiht a four-round
    average of 77.5. Kelly is tied for 14th with an average of 79.0
    strokes-per-round.

    Calvin will now break until October 5 when it competes at the fifth MIAA
    tournament of the fall. The tournament will be hosted by Adrian at the Lenawee
    Country Club.

    WOMEN'S GOLF

    Calvin took fourth in a field of five teams wiht a team score of 422 strokes
    Wednesday afternoon at the Aquinas College Invitational held at the Scott Lake
    Country Club.

    Hope took first place with a score of 345 followed by Aquinas with 388,
    Tri-State with 401 and Kalamazoo following Calvin with a score of 442.

    Freshman Annie Huizenga (Unity Christian HS) continued to pace Calvin as she
    fired a team-best score of 101. Freshman Jenny Anderson was the second-best
    finisher for Calvin with a round of 105 while sophomore Dawn Svenkeson (Scandia,
    MN) and freshman Anne Prins (Unity Christian HS) had scores of 108 and freshman
    Margaret Tassaro had a round of 109. Freshman Linnea Vincent (Grand Rapids
    Christian HS) closed out Calvin's finishers with a round of 115.

    Calvin returns to action on Saturday when it competes at an MIAA tournament
    hosted by Hope at the Winding Creek Golf Club.
