Calvin Sports Report for September 24, 2002

    WOMEN'S SOCCER

Over the past three years, overtime has been unkind for the Calvin women's
soccer team but on Tuesday, the Knights made overtime the right time as they
recorded a dramatic 4-3 overtime win over two-time defending MIAA champion
    Albion at Calvin Field.

The victory snapped Albion's 19-game MIAA regular season win streak and also
snapped a four-game losing streak to the Britons. In addition, it lifted Calvin
back into the MIAA title hunt as the Knights improved to 2-1 in the MIAA and 5-3
overall while Albion dropped to 6-2 overall and 2-1 in the MIAA.

Calvin is now locked in a three-way tie for second place in the league
standings with Hope and Albion, one point behind 2-0-1 Alma. Calvin will host
    Alma Saturday at noon.

Albion entered Tuesday's contest ranked fourth in the Great Lakes Region
    while Calvin was ranked 10th.

Albion got on the scoreboard first as Jayne Godlew broke loose on a quick
counterattack and ripped a shot that deflected off a Calvin defender, over
Calvin goaltender Leah VanderPloeg (Unity Christian HS) and into the net in the
28th minute of play. Calvin answered with a pair of goals less than a minute
apart to take a 2-1 lead. Freshman Noell Berghuis (Unity Christian) ignited the
first goal with a corner kick that found the foot of senior forward Tricia Dyk
(Western Michigan Christian). Dyk jumped on the bouncing corner kick and popped
it into the far corner to tie the game in the 32nd minute. Less than a minute
later, Berghuis stole an Albion back-pass and rifled a shot into the net to put
    the Knights up 2-1.

Calvin maintained its lead until Albion senior Stacy Supanich broke free on
another quick Albion counterattack and slipped a shot into the upper left hand
corner to tie the score at 2-2 in the 59th minute. Supanich struck again in the
74th minute on a one-on-one carry into the Calvin box. Pressed by a Calvin
defender, Supanich sent a chip over the outstretched arms of VanderPloeg and
into the net to give the Britons a 3-2 advantage with 16:43 left in regulation.

Calvin would answer just over a minute later however on a well-scripted play
that began with junior Dana Haan (Lynden, WA) bringing the ball up the left
wing. Moving to the tip of the Albion box, Haan delivered a perfect pass to Dyk
racing up the middle. The pass allowed Dyk to break free and she made no
mistake with the opportunity as she tucked a low hard shot past Albion
goaltender Erica Williams into the left-hand corner of the goal to tie the score
at 3-3 with 15:25 left to play.

Neither team would score the remainder of regulation sending the match into
overtime. Albion dominated the opening minutes of the overtime session,
pressuring with a pair of corner kicks. With less than a minute left in the
first 10-minute overtime session, Calvin brought the ball into Albion territory
and gained a corner kick try with 21 seconds left. Moving quickly, Calvin
senior Stephanie Kooima (Unity Christian HS) sent a well-placed strike to junior
Sara Derrico () in the top half of the box. Derrico redirected the corner to
the edge of the goalmouth and Calvin senior Lindy VanHaitsma (Unity Christian
HS) responded by tapping a bounding ball with her left foot that hopped over the
diving attempt of Williams and into the net with just 11 seconds left on the
    clock.

The "golden goal" was the first of the year for VanHaitsma. It also marked
Calvin's first overtime victory since 1998.

With her pair of goals, Dyk boosted her MIAA career total to 44 goals and her
career MIAA points total to 114 points. Dyk is now sixth on the all-time MIAA
    list for goals and points.

Albion outshot Calvin 18-15 but VanderPloeg came up with seven saves in goal
for the Knights while Williams have five saves for the Britons.
