CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR September 21, 2002

    WOMEN’S SOCCER

Freshman Noell Berghuis (Unity Christian HS) celebrated her 19th birthday in
style as she scored the coveted hat trick in a 7-1 victory over the Adrian
Bulldogs. Prior to Saturday’s game, Calvin had scored just one goal in its
last 205 minutes of play. Calvin would need only seconds to score in
Saturday’s match as Berghuis stole the opening kickoff and took it the full
length to score 13 seconds into the game. The Berghuis goal was only three
seconds off the NCAA III record for the fastest goal from the start of a game.
The record is 10 seconds, shared by Laine Montgomery of Goucher (set in 2000
against Gallaudet) and Brooke Davis of Oneonta State of New York (set in 2001
    against Scranton of Pennyslvania).

Sloppy play and miscommunication plagued the first half for both teams. Adrian
was able to score in the 27th minute to tie the game at 1-1 going into the
    half.

The second half was a new story for the Knights as they celebrated two Berghuis
goals in the first five minutes and twenty seconds, one of which was on a pass
from senior Tricia Dyk (Western Michigan Christian). The rest of the game
belonged to Dyk as she scored one of the final four goals and assisted on the
other three. Other goal scorers for the Knights were freshman Kara Zuidema
(Escondido Calvin Christian) in the 63rd minute, sophomore Colleen Ford (Charles
    A. Sprague) in the 74th minute and senior Stephanie Kooima (Unity Christian) in
the 77th minute. Sophomore Linnea Butler (Capital) earned an assist on
    Calvin’s second goal.

Senior goalkeeper Leah Vander Ploeg (Unity Christian) went the distance for the
Knights earning four saves in the victory. Dyk extended her team leading
statistics in scoring and assists to four and eight respectively.

Calvin ups its season record to 4-3 and its league record to 1-1. The Bulldogs
fall to 3-2 overall and 0-2 in the league.

The Knights will be back in action this Tuesday as they host the Albion
Britons. The kickoff is slated for 4:00 p.m., with the real audio radio
broadcast beginning about fifteen minutes prior to kickoff.

    MEN’S GOLF

A strong top-to-bottom finish allowed Calvin to gather first place honors at
MIAA Tournament #3 Saturday afternoon. The outing was hosted by Alma at the Pine
River Country Club and the Knights took a liking to the course as they posted a
first place total of 303 strokes in the seven-team field, four strokes ahead of
    second place Olivet.

The finish also moved Calvin into fourth place in the overall team standings,
six strokes back of third place Alma.

Junior Matt Kelly (Western Michigan Christian) led the Calvin surge with a
sizzling round of 73 that placed him in a three-way tie for second place.
Senior Tony Karsten (Holland Christian) was close behind with a score of 74 that
was good for fifth place individually. Junior Ryan Brandsma (Hindsale, IL) and
sophomore Mike Bratt (Lynden, WA) solidified Calvin’s finish with rounds of
78, placing them in a four-way tie for 14th place.

Senior Mike Sherman (Grand Rapids Christian) rounded out Calvin’s finishers
with a round of 83. Alden Hoksbergen of Hope earned medalist honors Saturday
    with a round of 71.

Calvin coach Jim Timmer was pleased with his team’s performance, particularly
the play of Bratt who served as the “fourth man” Calvin had been searching
for. “We had an excellent team performance,” said Timmer. “Matt Kelly is
really stepping up when we need him and Tony Karsten played liked a senior
leader. Ryan Brandsma has been Mr. consistent for us this year and he was there
    again today.’

“The big key for us though was the play of Mike Bratt,” continued Timmer.
“We’ve been searching for a fourth guy to step up for us and Mike has the
ability to be that player. I challenged him recently to step into that role and
    he responded.”

Calvin returns to action on Wednesday when it competes at the fourth MIAA
tournament of the year. The tournament will be hosted by Kalamazoo at the
    Indian River Golf Club.
