WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL
GRAND RAPIDS, MI - Calvin's MIAA home opener was a smashing success as the
Knights rolled to a 30-21, 30-21, 30-20 victory over visiting Adrian Tuesday
night at the Calvin Fieldhouse. The victory lifted Calvin to 8-3 overall and to
2-1 in the MIAA while Adrian saw its seven-match win streak snapped as the
Bulldogs dropped to 13-3 overall and to 3-1 in the MIAA.
Seniors Melissa Pell (Fremont/Fremont HS) and Laura Tucker (Holland/Holland
Christian HS) were a potent combination for the Knights as Pell picked up a
match-high 17 kills along with two blocks while Tucker tossed out a match-high
45 assists from her setter position.
Senior outside hitter Cassie Christopher (Fruitport/Fruitport HS) and sophomore
middle hitter Kara Kuipers (Hudsonville/Unity Christian HS) also had big
performances as Christopher tallied 10 kills while Kuipers came up with nine
kills and five service aces. Senior Sarah Rottman (Zeeland/Holland Christian
HS) and sophomore Kristin DeGroot (Tulare, CA) also chipped in with two aces
apiece.
Adrian was led in defeat by sophomore middle-hitter Lauree Dermyer who recorded
12 kills while junior setter Joanna Weigel picked up 28 assists and six digs.
Junior Chrissy Riske also collected eight kills and nine digs for the Bulldogs.
Calvin returns to action Friday night when it travels to Kalamazoo for a key
MIAA match scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m. at the Anderson Athletic Center.
