SPORTS REPORT FOR TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 17, 2002
MEN'S AND WOMEN'S SOCCER
Both Calvin soccer team continue to hold spots in the latest Great Lakes
Regional polls. The men's soccer team is ranked seventh in this week's poll, up
one spot from a week ago. On the women's side, Calvin is ranked seventh, down
one spot from last week.
Both Calvin teams return to action on Wednesday when they open up their MIAA
campaigns against rival Hope. The women will travel to Hope for a 4:00 p.m.
match while the men will host Hope at 4:00 p.m.. The Calvin-Hope men's match
will be broadcast live on the Calvin web site via real audio broadcast. A link

Calvin will host league-leading Adrian Tuesday night at the Calvin Fieldhouse
in a match scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m.. The match will be broadcast live on

MEN'S GOLF
The men's golf team had a solid showing over the weekend at the Ken Venturi
Invitational hosted by Tri-State University Saturday afternoon. Calvin finished
sixth in a field of 18 teams with a team score of 303. The University of
Indianapolis took first place with a score of 290 strokes with Brett Hulse of
Indianapolis earning medalist honors with a round of 69.
Calvin junior Matt Kelly (Western Michigan Christian) led the Knights with a
round of 74 that placed him a tie for 12th place. A year ago, Kelly fired a
career-best round of 69 in the same invitational. Senior Tony Karsten (Holland
Christian) was close behind with a score of 75 that placed him in a tie for 19th
place. Junior Ryan Brandsma (Hinsdale, IL) was Calvin's third man, finishing
tied for 26th place with a score of 76. Sophomore Mike Bratt (Lynden, WA) added
a score of 78 while junior Phil Rietema (Grand Rapids Baptist) added a score of
82.
Calvin returns to action on Wednesday when it competes at the second MIAA
outing of the year. The outing will be hosted by Olivet at the Bedford Valley
Country Club.
