CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR September 10, 2002
MEN'S SOCCER
ADA, OH - In a battle of regionally ranked opponents, Calvin defeated Ohio
Northern 1-0. The Knights (4-1), currently ranked eighth in the latest NCAA DIII
Great Lakes Regional poll, delivered the first loss of the season for the Polar
Bears (4-1), who checked into the poll rated fifth. The win also keeps the
Knights undefeated on the road (3-0) and puts a dent in the impressive home
record for ONU. Coming into the match the Polar Bears had recorded a 30-12-2
(.705) mark at home over the previous four seasons.
Calvin received the only goal of the match from sophomore Joel Veldhouse (Sioux
Falls Christian), who scored in third minute of competition on a long shot that
found the back of the net. The goal marked the fifth of the season for
Veldhouse, and extended his point scoring streak to five games.
Senior Justin Bouw (Unity Christian) notched the shutout for the Knights in
goal as he recorded two saves. Calvin and ONU each took 19 shots on goal.
Calvin will return to action on Saturday, traveling to Wooster College for a 1
PM matchup.
VOLLEYBALL
OLIVET, MI---Calvin College's volleyball team traveled to face the Comets of
Olivet College. Calvin won all three games of the match with scores of 30-13,
30-17, and 30-16. Sophomore Kathy Brenneman (North Muskegon) led the team in
kills with nine, and was followed closely by senior Melissa Pell (Fremont), who
recorded seven kills. Senior Laura Tucker (Holland Christian) keyed the
offensive attack as she dished out 30 assists. Pell was the Calvin leader in
blocks as she notched six. Sophomores Kara Kuipers (Unity Christian) and
Michelle Huyser (Window Rock) joined Tucker with four blocks each.
Calvin upped its record to 5-1 overall and 1-1 in conference play. The Knights
return to action this Friday and Saturday at the John Carroll Invitational.
MEN'S GOLF
MARSHALL, MI The men's golf team played at The Medalist Golf Club today, home
of the Albion Britons. Calvin finished sixth in the seven team field with a
score of 338. Seniors Tony Karsten (Holland Christian) and Mike Sherman (Grand
Rapids Christian) led the Knights in the tournament with scores of 83. Junior
Phil Rietema (Grand Rapids Baptist) shot an 84 for the tournament. Rounding out
the Knight's scores were junior Matt Kelly (Western Michigan Christian), who
shot an 88, and junior Ryan Brandsma (Timothy Christian), who shot a 90.
Hope College won the contest with a low score of 317. The Knights will regroup
this Saturday as they face Tri-State with a tee time of noon.
WOMEN'S SOCCER
WHEATON, IL - Nationally-ranked Wheaton flexed its muscles in the second half
in gaining a 5-0 victory over visiting Calvin Tuesday night. Ranked ninth in
the latest NCAA III national poll, Wheaton scored all five of its goals in the
second half to pull away for the win. Senior All-American forward Rebecca Mouw
accounted for Wheaton's first two goals and the Thunder then added a pair of
goals less than two minutes apart to put the contest out of reach.
Wheaton held a 37-9 shots at goal advantage. Calvin senior goaltender Leah
VanderPloeg (Unity Christian) picked up 13 saves in defeat.
Ranked eighth in the latest Great Lakes Regional poll, Calvin returns to action
on September 18 when it opens its MIAA campaign at rival Hope in a match
scheduled to begin at 4:00 p.m..
