Calvin Teams Receive MIAA Team GPA Award
GRAND RAPIDS, MI - Four Calvin College teams have been presented the Team GPA
award by the MIAA. The award, presented by the Faculty Athletic Representatives
of the MIAA member colleges recognizes conference athletic teams who achieved a
3.3 or better grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) for the entire 2001-2002
academic year.
This is the fourth year the award has been presented.
Honored for the fourth consecutive year from Calvin is the women's cross
country team. Under the direction of head coach Nancy Meyer, the women's
cross country team compiled a 3.548 grade point average, ranking as the
fifth-highest team GPA among MIAA athletic teams. .
Honored for the second consecutive year were the Calvin men's cross country
team, the Calvin women's track and field team and the Calvin women's
volleyball team. Coached by Jong-Il Kim, the women's track and field team
posted a 3.470 grade point average. Led by Jerry Bergsma, the volleyball team
achieved a 3.387 grade point average. The men's cross country team under the
guidance of coaches Brian Diemer and Al Hoekstra compiled a grade point average
of 3.33.
The 2001-2002 academic year brought a wealth of academic honors for Calvin
athletes as four individuals were named Verizon Academic All-Americans with 12
individuals receiving Verizon Academic All-District honors. Topping the list of
honorees was senior Joel Klooster of Chatham, Ontario who was named the Verizon
Academic All-American of the Year in men's cross country and track and field
while also receiving a spot on the Verizon Academic All-America first team for
the second straight year. Klooster was also the recipient of a prestigious NCAA
III Post-Graduate Scholarship. Also receiving Verizon Academic All-America
accolades in cross country and track and field were seniors Erinn Boot of
Kalamazoo (1st team), Dan Hoekstra of Kalamazoo (2nd team) and David Ritsema of
Denver, Colorado (2nd team). Receiving Verizon Academic All-District honors
from Calvin were seniors Sara Ahrenholz of Prinsburg, Minnesota, (women's
volleyball), Larissa Onderlinde of Kalamazoo (women's soccer); Susannah Knust
of Grandville (softball); Rachel Veltkamp of Grand Rapids (women's track and
field) and Adam Derrickson of Muskegon (men's golf) along with junior Becky
Austen of Pembroke, Ontario (softball); and sophomores Tim Avery of Rochester,
New York (men's cross country/track and field) and Jessie Lair of West
Bloomfield (women's cross country/track and field).
Calvin senior Peter Knoester of Grand Rapids also collected a prestigious
academic honor during the year as he was named a recipient of a prestigious
Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar Award in men's soccer by the publication Black
Issues in Higher Education.
In addition, 89 Calvin scholar-athletes were named to the MIAA Academic Honor
Roll including 15 individuals who were named to the list for a fourth straight
year. The honor roll recognizes scholar-athletes who achieve a minimum 3.5
grade-point average (on a 4.0 scale) fore the entire 2002/2002 academic year.
Receiving MIAA Academic Honor Roll recognition for a fourth straight year from
Calvin were Sara Ahrenholz (Prinsburg, MN/Central Minnesota Christian HS) in
women's volleyball, Justin Bolt (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) in
men's track and field, Erinn Boot (Kalamazoo/Kalamazoo Christian HS) in
women's cross country and track and field, Michelle Bowen (Troy/Troy Athens
HS) in volleyball, Adam Derrickson (Muskegon/North Muskegon HS) in men's golf,
Joel Klooster (Chatham, ON/Chatham Christian HS) in men's cross country and
track and field, Peter Knoester (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) in
men's soccer, Susannah Knust (Grandville/Grandville HS) in softball,
Stephanie Kooima (Hudsonville/Unity Christian HS) in women's soccer, Bryan
Linn (Indianapolis, IN/Pike HS) in men's swimming, Kris Lumkes (Elkhorn,
WI/Delevan-Darien HS) in women's cross country, Laura Medema (Grand
Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian) in women's cross country and track and field,
Larissa Onderlinde (Kalamazoo/Kalamazoo Christian HS) in women's soccer, David
Ritsema (Denver, CO/Denver Christian HS) in men's cross country and track and
field and Rachel Veltkamp (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) in women's
track and field.
