Calvin 11th in Final Sears Director's Cup Standings

GRAND RAPIDS, MI -- Calvin College has finished 11th in the final Sears
Director's Cup Division III standings with 490 points, its fourth-highest finish
ever in the Sears Director's Cup standings. Over the last four years Calvin
has finished seventh, sixth, ninth and now eleventh; it also has seven straight
top 25 finishes. Since the Sears Director's Cup was initiated at the NCAA
Division III level for the 1995-96 academic year, Calvin is one of only nine
schools to finish in the top-25 all seven years. Joining Calvin in the group
are Williams (MA), College of New Jersey, Amherst (MA), Middlebury (Vt), Ithaca
(NY), Wisconsin-LaCrosse, SUNY-Cortland, Emory (Ga.) and Rowan (N.J.).

The Sears Director's Cup is based on points earned by teams that compete in
NCAA Championship events and is presented annually by the National Association
of Collegiate Director's of Athletics (NACDA) to the best overall collegiate
athletics program in the country. The Sears Director's Cup race is held at the
NCAA I, II and III levels and also for NAIA institutions.

Points are awarded based on each institution's finish in NCAA III
Championship competition in up to 18 sports -- nine for men and nine for women.
Each national champion receives 100 points with a national runner-up finish
worth 90 points. Third place is worth 80 points and fourth place finishes count
for 75 points with a sliding point scale continuing on down by order of finish.

Williams captured the 2001-2002 Sears Director's Cup competition with a total
of 989 points, marking its second consecutive Sears Director's Cup crown and
sixth in the last seven years. Ithaca earned second place with 852 points, the
College of New Jersey finished third with 751 points, Middlebury placed fourth
with 703.5 points while Emory rounded out the top-five with 673 points.

Calvin scored in baseball, men's track and field, and women's track and
field this spring. The baseball team earned 20 points with its second NCAA III
Tournament appearance in three years. The men's track and field team earned
90 points with its second place finish at the NCAA III Championships while the
women's track and field team earned 70.5 points with its 12th place finish.
Calvin scored in eight sports this year highlighted by a pair of national
runner-up performances as the men's cross country team and the men's track
and field team each placed second at the DIII level. Other teams that scored
points included the women's cross country team, volleyball, men's and
    women's swim teams.
