The Calvin men's and women's track and field teams will send a combined 16
athletes to the NCAA III Outdoor Track and Field Championships this weekend. The
Calvin men will send seven individuals while the Calvin women will send nine.
The national meet will be hosted by Macalester College in St. Paul, Minnesota,
with the first
day of competition slated for Thursday, May 23. The final day of competition
will be
held on Saturday, May 25.
A year ago, the Calvin women finished second as a team with 49 points while the
Calvin
men finished fifth with 31.5 points.
The following is a biographical breakdown of the 16 individuals that will
represent Calvin at the national meet this week.
Calvin's National Meet Track Teams
Calvin men
RYAN MOORE--A native of Wexford, Pennsylvania (North Allegheny High School) who
is a senior, Moore will compete in the discus and will be making his first
appearance at nationals. Moore was a member of the All-MIAA track and field
team this spring after winning the discus title. He is seeded 10th with a throw
of 162-5.
HENDRIK KOK--A native of Lynden, Washington (Lynden Christian High School) who
is a sophomore, Kok will compete in the 1,500 and 5,000 meters and will be
making his first appearance at nationals. Kok was a member of the All-MIAA track
and field team this spring after winning the 800 and 1,500 meters at the MIAA
Championships. He is seeded 10th in the 1,500 with a time of 3:52.25 and eighth
in the 5,000 meters with a time of 14:31.01.
JASON DEVRIES--A native of Hudsonville (Unity Christian High School) who is a
senior, DeVries will compete in the pole vault and will be making his first
appearance at nationals. DeVries is seeded 11th with a mark of 15-9. DeVries
posted his mark of 15-9 at the Len Paddock Invitational two weeks ago at the
University of Michigan. It marks the fourth straight year that a member of the
Calvin men's track and field team will compete in the pole vault at the
national meet as Mark DeWeerd was a national qualifier for Calvin in the event
in 1999, 2000 and 2001.
JOEL KLOOSTER--A native of Chatham, Ontario (Chatham Christian High School) who
is a senior academically but is a junior in track and field eligibility.
Klooster will be making his second trip to the NCAA III Track & Field
Championships after sitting out the 2001 track and field season with an injury.
In 2000, Klooster competed in the 5,000 meters at the NCAA III Championships
hosted by North Central College and earned All-America accolades with a fourth
place finish. This spring, Klooster captured the MIAA title in the 5,000 meters
to earn a spot on the All-MIAA track and field team for the second time in his
career. He was then named the MIAA's Most Outstanding Runner. He is the top
seed in the 10,000 meters with a time of 24:42.79 (Calvin record). Along with
J.B. Haglund of Haverford College, Klooster is one of two individuals to have
posted 10K times under 30 minutes this spring. In addition, Klooster will
compete in the 5,000 meters where he is seeded fourth with a time of 14:25.51
(Calvin record). Over the course of his collegiate running career, Klooster has
earned All-America honors three times - twice in track and field and once in
cross country.
DAN HOEKSTRA--Hoekstra will be making his third trip to the NCAA III Outdoor
Track and Field Championships. A senior from Kalamazoo (Kalamazoo Christian
High School) Hoekstra will be seeking All-America status in track and field for
the third time in the last four years. At the 1999 NCAA III Championships at
Baldwin-Wallace College, he posted his first All-America berth with an eighth
place finish in the 5,000 meters. At the national meet last spring hosted by
Millikin University, he was a two-time All-American, finishing eighth in the
10,000 meters and 5,000 meters. Hoekstra will compete in the 10,000 meters and
5,000 meters this weekend. Hoekstra is seeded third in the 10,000 meters
(30:19.83) and 10th in the 5,000 meters (14:32.63). This spring, Hoekstra
received All-MIAA track and field honors for the third time in his career.
Hoekstra is also a two-time All-American in cross country, having finished 2nd
at the 2000 national meet and 21st at the national meet this fall.
KEITH VAN GOOR--A native of Midland Park, New Jersey (Midland Park High School)
who is a senior, Van Goor will compete in the 200 meters. He is making his
fourth trip to the NCAA III Track and Field Championships but will be competing
in the 200 meters for the first time. He is seeded 11th in the 200 with a time
of 21.64. In 1999, he was part of Calvin's 4 x 400 meter relay team that took
third and was then a member of Calvin's national runner-up 4 x 400 meter teams
in 2000 and in 2001. This spring, VanGoor was named to the All-MIAA track and
field team for the third time in his career after capturing individual league
titles in the 200 and 400 meters while also running a leg on Calvin's MIAA
Championship 4 x 100 meter relay team.
JUSTIN PFRUENDER--A senior from Midland (Midland High School), Pfruender is
making his third appearance at nationals. He will compete in the 3,000 meter
steeplechase and in the 5,000 meters. Pfruender is seeded seventh in the
steeplechase with a time of 9:09.20 and 16th in the 5,000 meters with a time of
14:38.37. Pfruender was an All-MIAA track and field selection for the third time
this spring after winning the league championship in the steeplechase. At the
NCAA III Track and Field Championships last spring at Millikin University,
Pfruender earned All-America recognition in the 5,000 meters with a seventh
place finish. Pfruender has also received All-America distinction twice in cross
country, finishing 14th at the 2000 NCAA III Championships and sixth at the 2001
championships.
Calvin women
LINDSAY CARRIER-A native of Wyoming (Tri-unity Christian High School) who is a
senior, Carrier will compete in the 10,000 meter run where she is seeded 18th
with a time of 36:49.60. A member of Calvin's national championship women's
cross country teams in 1998 and 1999, Carrier will be making her second
appearance at the NCAA III Track and Field Championships. A year ago, she
finished 12th in the 10,000 meters and 20th in the 5,000 meters. Carrier earned
a spot on the All-MIAA track and field team for the second straight year this
spring.
SUE ABBRING--A freshman from Highland, Indiana (Illiana Christian High School)
who is a freshman, Abbring will compete in the 200 meters and in the 4 x 100 and
4 x 400 meter relay events. She is seeded 26th in the 200 meters with a time of
25.21. Calvin's 4 x 100 meter relay is seeded 10th with a time of 48.00 while
its 4 x 400 meter relay team is seeded sixth with a time of 3:50.39. Abbring
was named to the All-MIAA track and field team this spring after winning league
titles in the 100 and 200 meter dashes. She also ran legs on Calvin's 4 x 100
and 4 x 400 meter relay teams that established new MIAA records.
LAURA HAMILTON- A freshman from Downers Grove, Illinois (Timothy Christian High
School), Hamilton will compete in the 400 meter hurdles and in the 4 x 100 and 4
x 400 meter relay events. She is seeded 18th in the 400 meter hurdles with a
time of 1:03.26. Hamilton earned a spot on the All-MIAA track and field team
this spring after winning the league title in the 400 meter hurdles and running
legs on Calvin's record-setting relay teams.
RACHEL VELTKAMP--A senior from Grand Rapids (Grand Rapids Christian High
School), Veltkamp will compete in the pole vault and in the 4 x 100 meter relay.
This is her fourth trip to nationals. In 1999, she competed in the 400 meter
relay and in the long jump and in 2000, she competed in the pole vault where she
finished ninth in the event. At the 2001 NCAA III Championships, she earned
All-America honors twice, finishing third in the pole vault and running a leg on
Calvin's 4 x 100 meter relay team that placed fifth. She is the second seed
in the pole vault with a mark of 12-6 (Calvin record) established at the Len
Paddock Invitational May 10. This spring, Veltkamp was named the MIAA's Most
Outstanding Field Performer after winning the MIAA pole pole vault title with a
league record vault of 11-7. It also marked her third straight MIAA title in
the pole vault and the fourth MIAA individual title of her career. She also
earned a spot on the All-MIAA track and field team for the fourth consecutive
year this spring, becoming the 19th athlete in MIAA women's track and field
history to receive the honor four straight years.
KATIE CORNER--A sophomore from Grand Rapids (Catholic Central High School),
Corner will compete in the in the discus where she is seeded third with a throw
of 154-0 (Calvin record). She will be making her first appearance at the
national meet. At the MIAA Championships this spring, Corner captured the
league title in the discus while finishing third in the shot put to earn a spot
on the All-MIAA team for the first time in her career.
MINDY WORST--A senior from Grand Rapids (Grand Rapids Christian High School),
Worst is making her third trip to nationals. She will compete in the 4 X 400
meter and 4 x 100 meter relay events. Worst took first in the 400 meters (58.39)
and fourth in the 200 meters (25.94) at the MIAA Championships while also
running legs on Calvin's first place 4 x 100 and 4 x 400 meter relay teams
Her efforts landed her a spot on the All-MIAA team for the third straight year.
JESSIE LAIR- A sophomore from West Bloomfield (Southfield Christian High
School), Lair is making her second trip to nationals. She will compete in the
10,000 and 5,000 meter events. She is seeded 7th in the 10,000 meters with a
time of 36:01.80 and 13th in the 5,000 meters with a time of 17:25.35. At the
2001 NCAA III Track and Field Championships, she finished 14th in the 10,000
meters. Lair took first place in the 5,000 meters at the MIAA Championships
this spring for the second straight year and earned a spot on the All-MIAA team
for a second time.
SARAH HASTINGS- A sophomore from Traverse City, (Traverse City Central High
School), Hastings is making her first trip to nationals. She will compete in
the 10,000 and 5,000 meter events. She is seeded 22nd in the 10,000 meters with
a time of 36:51.85 and 17th in the 5,000 meters with a time of 17:33.82. At the
MIAA Championships this spring, she captured a league title in the 10,000 meters
with a time of 38:37.90 to earn a spot on the All-MIAA team for the first time
in her career.
ANNIE VANDERLAAN- A junior from Grand Rapids (Grand Rapids Christian High
School), VanderLaan is making her second trip to nationals. She will compete in
the two-day heptathlon competition as well as the 100 hurdles and 4 x 100 and 4
x 400 meter relay events. In the heptathlon, VanderLaan is seeded seventh with
4,503 points (Calvin record). In the 100 meter hurdles, she is seeded 14th with
a time of 14.75 (Calvin record). A year ago she was an All-American in the
heptathlon with a fifth place individual total of . VanderLaan was the MIAA
champion in the 100 meter hurdles for the third straight year this spring while
also finishing second in the 200 meters and running on Calvin's record-setting
4 x 100 and 4 x 400 meter relay teams. For her efforts, she was named the
MIAA's Most Valuable Runner and earned a spot on the All-MIAA track and
field for the third straight year.
