GRAND RAPIDS -- Calvin College senior Adam Derrickson has been named to the
Verizon Academic All-District IV second team in the at-large college division.
The college division of the Verizon Academic All-America program includes NCAA
II, NCAA III and NAIA schools. Sports included in the men's college at-large
division are tennis, swimming and diving, golf, fencing, lacrosse, wrestling,
volleyball, skiing, ice hockey, gymnastics and rifle. The Verizon Academic
All-District and All-America teams are selected by the College Sports
Information Director's Association of America (CoSIDA). To be eligible for
nomination, a player must be a starter or a key reserve with a minimum
cumulative GPA of 3.20.
A native of Muskegon and a graduate of North Muskegon High School, Derrickson
has been a four-year member of the Calvin men's golf team and served as team
captain in 2000 and in 2001. He is the first-ever golfer in Calvin history to
receive Verizon Academic All-District honors. Derrickson is set to graduate from
Calvin this afternoon with a degree in biology. He plans to attend medical
school at Loma Linda University (CA) next fall. Heading into final semester
exams, Derrickson carried a grade point average of 3.80. A three-time member of
the MIAA Academic Honor Roll, Derrickson is a seven-time member of the Calvin
Dean's List.
Derrickson has also been active in the community during his four years at
Calvin, volunteering at Mel Trotter Ministries, Home Repair Services and In His
Image. He has also served as a representative on Calvin's Student Athletic
Committee (SAC).
This past fall, Derrickson was named to the All-MIAA second team in golf after
serving as a captain on a Calvin team that finished third in the final league
standings. Derrickson finished 12th in the final MIAA standings with a league
average of 81.7 strokes-per-round. As a junior in 2000, Derrickson helped lead
Calvin to a second place MIAA finish as he placed fourth in the final MIAA
individual standings with a league average of 79.3 stroke-per-round. His
average in 2000 is the 13th-best single-season average in Calvin men's golf
history. Over the last two years, Derrickson fired five sub-80 rounds in 13
starts. A career highlight came in the fourth MIAA outing of the 2001 season as
Derrickson fired a course-record score of 74 at the Watermark Country Club that
serves as Calvin's home course. The record score helped Calvin take first
place at the outing with a team total and course-record score of 382 strokes.
Derrickson is the fourth athlete from Calvin to receive Verizon Academic
All-District honors this year. Previously honored from Calvin during the
2001-2002 academic year were Larissa Onderlinde (women's soccer), Susannah
Knust (softball) and Becky Austen (softball).
