    Cole & Deters Receive MIAA Player/Pitcher of the Week Honors

    GRAND RAPIDS, MI - A pair of Calvin athletes have earned MIAA Player of the
    Week accolades for their performances last week.

    Named MIAA Player of the Week for the first time in her career is sophomore
    Keri Cole of the Calvin softball team while freshman Jim Deters of the Calvin
    baseball team has been named MIAA Pitcher of the Week for the second time this
    year.

    A sophomore from Fountain and a graduate of Mason County Eastern High School,
    Cole doubles as a pitcher and first baseman for the Calvin softball team. This
    past week, she helped Calvin post a 5-3 record including a 3-3 mark in league
    play. At the plate, Cole collected four hits during the week including a pair
    of RBI doubles in a doubleheader against Hope Saturday afternoon that saw the
    Knights suffer a pair of defeats in extra-innings. In the opener of
    Saturday's doubleheader with Hope, Cole delivered a dramatic two-out
    two-run RBI double that tied the game at three and sent the contest into extra
    innings. In game two, Cole suffered a heart-breaking 3-2 loss on the mound as
    she scattered seven hits over 10.2 innings of work. Defensively, Cole was
    charged with just one error in 11 fielding chances over the course of the week
    for a fielding percentage of .909.

    Overall, Cole has a .315 batting average with 15 RBI's and 13 runs scored
    along with a fielding percentage of .973. On the mound, Cole has a 6-4 record
    with a 4.08 ERA. She is also second on the Calvin staff in innings pitched with
    70.1 innings of work along with 28 strikeouts on the season. The Calvin
    softball team is currently 17-11 overall and in fourth place in the MIAA
    standings with a 4-4 conference mark. The Knights return to action on Tuesday
    when they travel to Albion for a conference doubleheader slated to start at 3:30
    p.m..

    Deters hails from Portage and is a graduate of Kalamazoo Christian High School.
     A right-handed pitcher, Deters is receiving MIAA Pitcher of the Week accolades
    for the second time in the last four weeks after hurling a three-hit,
    complete-game shutout in a 6-0 win over Kalamazoo Saturday afternoon. In the
    victory, Deters struck out 14 Kalamazoo batters, one short of a career-high. The
    victory over Kalamazoo was the third of the week for Deters as he picked up a
    win in relief in an 8-4 win at Adrian Monday and then proceeded to pitch a
    seven-inning complete-game win that same afternoon in an 8-5 triumph over the
    Bulldogs. The trio of pitching victories last week raised his season won-loss
    record to 7-1 and lowered his overall earned run average to 2.82. Deters also
    has 75 strikeouts overall and is among the NCAA III leaders in
    strikeouts-per-nine innings. In conference play, Deters is 5-0 with 48
    strikeouts and a 1.71 earned run average.

    The Calvin baseball team is currently 21-7 overall and in second place in the
    MIAA standings with an 11-1 conference mark. In winning two of three games this
    past weekend against Kalamazoo College, Calvin reached the 20-win plateau for
    the third straight year. Ranked eighth in the latest Division III Mideast
    Regional poll, Calvin returns to action on Tuesday when it hosts Division II
    Saginaw Valley State at 4:00 p.m.. The Knights then travel to Alma on Friday
    and Saturday for a three-game conference series.

    BASEBALL

    Calvin remains in the latest set of NCAA III regional rankings as the Knights
    are part of a three-way tie for eighth in the latest Mideast Regional poll
    released this afternoon.

    Calvin shares the number-eight slot with Otterbein (OH) and Baldwin-Wallace
    (OH). Wooster (OH) is the top-ranked team in the region followed by Marietta
    (OH) in the number-two spot. Calvin is one of two MIAA schools in the regional
    rankings as Hope is ranked fourth in the regional poll.

    This past weekend, Calvin reached the 20-win plateau by winning two of three
    games against Kalamazoo. The Knights will host Division II Saginaw Valley State
    University Tuesday at 4:00 p.m. and will then open a three-game weekend series
    at conference rival Alma Friday at 4:00 p.m..

    BASKETBALL

    Calvin College sophomore Kevin Broene was one of the finest free throw shooters
    in NCAA III men's basketball during the 2001-2002 season. A native of Grand
    Rapids and a graduate of Grand Rapids Christian High School, Broene finished
    fourth in free throw shooting in the final NCAA III men's basketball
    statistics released today. Over the course of the year, the 6-3 shooting guard
    connected on 81 of 89 attempts for a 91.01 percent free throw clip. Broene was
    surpassed only by Jason Luisi of Suffolk (92.6); Shawn Mccormick of
    Baldwin-Wallace (92.5) and Kyle Vogt of Lakeland (91.02) in free throw
    percentage in the final NCAA III standings.

    Broene's father Greg - a 1974 graduate of Calvin, holds the Calvin
    single-season free throw percentage record with a 92.0 percent free throw clip
    established during the 1973-74 season when he connected on 46 of 50 free throw
    attempts.

    Broene's free throw shooting this past year also helped Calvin shoot 75.8
    percent from the free throw line as a team - good for 16th place on the NCAA III
    team list. In addition, Calvin finished 38th in scoring margin as the Knights
    outscored their opponents by 9.8 points a game.

    Calvin finished the 2001-2002 season with a 20-7 overall record, reaching the
    20-win plateau for the 13th time in school history. The Knights also finished
    9-3 in the MIAA regular season to capture their fourth straight MIAA title and
    27th overall.
