SPORTS REPORT FOR APRIL 1, 2002

    BASEBALL

A dominating pitching performance from freshman right hander Jim Deters
propelled visiting Calvin to a 2-1 victory over Olivet, allowing the Knights to
sweep the three-game series with the Comets and extend their winning streak to
four games. Calvin opened the series with a pair of victories Saturday, winning
    7-4 and 3-1.

A native of Portage and a graduate of Kalamazoo Christian High School, Deters
picked up his second complete-game victory of his career as he scattered three
hits over nine innings of work. Deters also established a career-high in
strikeouts as he struck out 15 Comets on the afternoon, surpassing his
13-strikeout total earlier this year in a 4-0 shutout win over Wittenberg
University. The 15-strikeout performance by Deters is the third highest
single-game performance in MIAA history, surpassed only by a 16-strikeout
performance by Hope's Kevin Kittle against Calvin in 1999, and a 17-strikeout
performance by Alma's Al Goetz against Olivet in 1983.

Deters (3-1) struck out six of the first seven batters he faced and did not
allow a hit until the seventh inning when the Comets (8-5 overall, 0-3 MIAA)
scored their only run of the game. Calvin (11-6 overall, 3-0 MIAA) took a 2-0
lead with a run in the first and a run in the second. Junior Arie Eppinga
(Walnut Creek, CA) drove in Calvin's first run as he ripped a two-out single
to score freshman Josh Vriesman (Denver, CO) who had reached base on a out-out
double. Calvin added another run in the second as sophomore Darrell Heuker
(Unity Christian) reached base on an error, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt
by senior Mike Noorman (Covenant Christian) and then scored on an RBI single by
    sophomore Bryce Weston (Petoskey).

Olivet picked up its first hit of the game on a lead-off single by Beau Locker
in the seventh. Locker then moved to second on an error and later scored on a
two-out single by Richard Strain. Deters then bore down and retired the final
seven batters in succession to allow the Knights to gain the one-run victory.

Calvin picked up seven hits on the chilly afternoon with Eppinga picking up two
hits and reaching base on all four of his trips to the plate as he also walked
and reached base on an error.

With one conference series under its belt, Calvin is tied for first place in
the MIAA standings with Adrian as the Bulldogs swept a three-game series from
    Kalamazoo.

Calvin is scheduled to face Aquinas on Wednesday at 4:00 pm in a game scheduled
to be played at Kimble Stadium in Wyoming.

    WOMEN'S SWIMMING & DIVING

(The following release was sent out from the MIAA office this evening)

Calvin College Declared 2002 MIAA Women's Swimming Champion after Hope College
Reports Use of an Ineligible Athlete

The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) was recently notified
by Hope College of the use of an ineligible athlete in its swimming program
    during the past season.

Hope College, in a self-report to the National Collegiate Athletic Association
(NCAA) and the MIAA, reported that an error occurred in interpreting the
academic record of a transfer student and her subsequent eligibility to compete.
Hope College officials said the error was discovered after the season
    concluded.

Based on information provided to the MIAA, the results of the 2002 MIAA women's
swimming championships are being changed to remove the ineligible swimmer from
the events in which she competed and then moving other competitors up in the
standings of those events, according to Commissioner Sheila Wallace Kovalchik.

As a result, Calvin College is declared the 2002 MIAA women's swimming
champion. Hope College will finish in second place based on the new championship
meet point totals (Calvin 520, Hope 444). While the point totals of other teams
have changed, the order of finish has not with Kalamazoo 3rd (282 points),
    Albion 4th (265), Saint Mary's 5th 225, Alma 6th (202) and Olivet 7th (73).

The order of standings for the MIAA Commissioner's Cup and MIAA Women's
All-Sports Award through the winter season have also been recalculated. The
    revised standings for the Commissioner's Cup are: 1. Hope 115, 2. Calvin 105, 3.
    Kalamazoo 95, 4. Albion 81, 5. Alma 66, 6. Adrian 42, 7. Olivet 29. The new
    standings for the MIAA Women's All-Sports Award are: 1. Hope 63, 2. Calvin 57,
    3. Kalamazoo 52, 4. Albion 45, 5. Alma 38, 6. Adrian 26, 7. Saint Mary's 24, 8.
    Olivet. 11.
