Calvin 15th in Latest Sears Director's Cup Standings
GRAND RAPIDS, MI -- Calvin College is 15th in the latest Sears Director's Cup
Division III standings with 309.5 points. The Sears Director's Cup is based on
points earned by teams that compete in NCAA Championship events and is presented
annually by the National Association of Collegiate Director's of Athletics
(NACDA) to the best overall collegiate athletics program in the country. The
Sears Director's Cup race is held at the NCAA I, II and III levels and also for
NAIA institutions.
The latest standings reflect the final standings after the winter sports
season. This is the final winter standings and includes the sports of women's
and men's basketball, ice hockey, swimming and indoor track and field; men's
wrestling; and fencing, rifle and skiing.
Points are awarded based on each institution's finish in NCAA III
Championship competition in up to 18 sports -- nine for men and nine for women.
Each national champion receives 100 points with a national runner-up finish
worth 90 points. Third place is worth 80 points and fourth place finishes count
for 75 points with a sliding point scale continuing on down by order of finish.
Calvin earned 178 points during the fall sports season and picked up 131.5
points during the winter sports season. Scoring points for Calvin during the
winter sports season were its men's and women's swimming and diving teams.
The women's swimming and diving team finished 27th at the recent NCAA III
Championships, scoring 56.5 Sears Director's Cup points. The men's swimming
and diving team finished ninth at the NCAA III Championships last weekend to
pick up 75 Sears Director's Cup points. The ninth place finish by the Calvin
men's swimming and diving team marked its first-ever top-10 national finish.
Defending Sears Director's Cup champion Williams (MA) leads the current
standings with 622.5 points with the College of New Jersey in a close second
with 588 points. Wisconsin-Stevens Point is next with 577 points while Ithaca
of New York rounds out the top four with 552 points. Calvin holds an 8.5 point
lead over 16th place St. Lawrence of New York while 14th place Washington of
Missouri has 321 points to hold an 11.5 point lead over Calvin.
A year ago, Calvin finished ninth in the final Sears Director's Cup Division
III standings with 474 points which was its third-highest finish in the Sears
Director's Cup race and its sixth consecutive year in the top-25. Since the
Sears Director's Cup was initiated at the NCAA Division III level for the
1995-96 academic year, Calvin is one of only nine schools to finish in the
top-25 all six years. Joining Calvin in the group are Williams (MA), College of
New Jersey, Amherst (MA), Middlebury (Vt), Ithaca (NY), Wisconsin-LaCrosse,
SUNY-Cortland, Emory (Ga.) and Rowan (N.J.).
This is the seventh year for the Sears Director's Cup chase at the NCAA III
level. Calvin also finished 25th during the 1997-98 season with 200 points;
22nd for the 1996-97 season with 321.5 points and 11th during the 1995-96
