    BASEBALL

    MIDLAND - Calvin snapped a four-game losing skid and improve to 8-6 in the
    process with a 14-9 victory at Northwood Institute Wednesday afternoon. The
    Calvin bats were busy as the Knights collected a season-high 18 hits in the win
    with freshman Josh Vriesman (Denver, CO) and junior Arie Eppinga (Walnut Creek,
    CA) combining for nine of Calvin's 18 hits.

    A freshman shortstop, Vriesman went 4-for-6 at the plate with a double and five
    runs scored. Through 14 games this year, Vriesman is hitting at a healthy .425
    clip (17-for-40). A junior first baseman, Eppinga was 5-for-6 at the dish with
    a double and four RBI's. Also collecting doubles for the Knights were senior
    Mark Jansen (Denver, CO) and freshman Tim Hansen (Ludington).

    Calvin trailed 5-1 after three innings but cut the cap to 7-5 through four
    innings. In the top of the sixth, the Knights scored a pair of runs to tie the
    game at 7-7.

    Calvin then scored five times in the eighth and twice in the ninth to pull away
    for the road victory.

    Senior James Cottier (Denver, CO) picked up the victory in relief to up his
    record to 2-1 on the year. Also throwing for Calvin on Wednesday were seniors
    Andy Miedema (Unity Christian) and Matt Schmitz (Ionia) and freshmen Jim Deters
    (Kalamazoo Christian) and Jay Smith (Oak Hill, VA).

    Calvin returns to action on Friday when it opens up its MIAA campaign at Olivet
    in a single nine-inning game set to begin at 3:00 p.m.. The two teams will then
    conclude the series with a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 1:00 p.m..

    WOMEN'S TENNIS

    Calvin upped its record to 4-2 on the year with a 5-4 non-conference win at
    Aquinas Wednesday afternoon. Calvin picked up four points in single play and
    then gained its final and match-deciding point at number-one doubles.

    Calvin is scheduled to host Hope Thursday at 3:00 p.m. in the MIAA opener for
    the Knights.
