Veenstra Named NABC Division III 2nd Team All-American
GRAND RAPIDS, MI - Calvin College junior forward Jeremy Veenstra has been named
a 2nd team NCAA Division III All-American by the National Association of
Basketball Coaches (NABC). Veenstra is one of 16 individuals selected to the
NABC Division III All-America team with eight individuals selected to the first
team and eight to the second team.
In receiving the award, Veenstra becomes the seventh individual in Calvin
men's basketball history to be so honored and the first since Aaron Winkle
was named to the NABC Division III first team in 2000. He is also the second
Veenstra to receive the honor as his older cousin Mark Veenstra was an NABC
Division III All-American in 1977.
The NABC All-America squad is the second All-America team Veenstra has been
named to this post-season as he was also selected to the D3hoops.com All-America
fourth team earlier this month.
A native of Kalamazoo and a graduate of Kalamazoo Christian High School,
Veenstra averaged 18.1 points and 8.9 rebounds a game this year while connecting
on 48.7 percent of his field goal attempts and 68.9 percent of his free throw
attempts.
The 2001 and 2002 MIAA MVP in men's basketball, Veenstra also averaged just
under 3.0 assists-per-game and blocked a team-leading 42 shots. In league play,
he finished second in the MIAA scoring race with 186 points for an average of
15.5 points a game. He also finished second in the league in blocked
shots-per-game (1.75) and third in rebounding average (7.8). Over the course of
the year, Veenstra had nine double-double efforts to boost his career total to
23 double-doubles. He also scored in double-figures in all 27 of Calvin's games
this year to extend his double-figure scoring streak to 45 games. He was also
named MIAA Player of the Week four times, bringing his career total of MIAA
Player of the Week awards to eight - second on the all-time Calvin men's
basketball list behind Steve Honderd who received the award 10 times between
1989-1993.
Veenstra helped Calvin finish the 2001-2002 season with a 20-7 overall record,
marking the 13th time in school history that the Knights reached the 20-win
plateau. The Knights also finished 9-3 in the MIAA regular season to capture
their fourth straight MIAA title and 27th overall. During the year, Veenstra
moved into sixth place on the all-time Calvin scoring list and concluded his
junior campaign with 1,498 career points. Heading into his final year of
college ball, Veenstra has also amassed 692 rebounds and 243 assists in his
Calvin career.
Born December 18, 1980 in the Phillipines capital of Manilla, Veenstra is
currently serving on a missions trip in the city of his birth.
