Calvin Sports Report For Tuesday, March 19, 2002
BASEBALL
Calvin opened the northern portion of its 2002 campaign with a 10-2 loss to
cross-town rival Aquinas Tuesday afternoon at Calvin Field.
Aquinas (10-4) used the long-ball to defeat the Knights (7-4) as the Saints
went deep twice off the Calvin pitching staff. A two-run homer by Greg Skiba in
the fifth helped Aquinas build a 5-0 lead and Brentt Backing added a solo shot
in the seventh to give the Saints a 7-0 lead.
Calvin remained hitless until the bottom of the seventh when junior Arie
Eppinga (Walnut Creek, CA) belted a double into the right-centerfield gap.
Trailing 10-0, the Knights then broke through for a pair of runs in the eighth
as freshman Tim Hansen (Ludington) delivered a towering pinch-hit two-run homer
over the left-field fence.
Calvin managed just three hits off the Aquinas pitching staff with Eppinga
collecting two of the three hits for the Knights. Freshman Jay Stringer (Oak
Hill, VA) took the loss for Calvin to fall to 0-1 on the year. Stringer allowed
six hits and five runs in five innings of work. Senior James Cottier (Denver,
CO) came on for two innings of relief while freshman Cody Teller (Romeo) and
senior Mike Ott (Grand Rapids Union) both turned in one inning of relief.
Brandon Bailey (3-0) picked up the win for Aquinas as he struck out seven
batters without allowing a hit over five innings of work.
Calvin returns to action on Saturday when it travels to number-one ranked
Marietta (OH) for a doubleheader scheduled to begin at 1:00 pm. The first game
of Saturday's twinbill will be a seven-inning contest with the nightcap slated
for nine innings. A year ago, Marietta finished as the national runner-up in
Division III. Calvin will be the second MIAA opponent for the Pioneers this
weekend as they will also host Adrian on Friday.
