REPORT FOR THURSDAY, MARCH 14, 2002

    WOMEN'S SWIMMING & DIVING

OXFORD, OH - Calvin College junior Katie Nagelkirk came up with yet another
school record on the first night of competition at the NCAA III Women's Swimming
and Diving Championships at the University of Miami at Ohio. The Holland
Christian graduate garnered honorable mention All-America recognition in the 50
freestyle Thursday night with a school record time of 23.85 that was good for
ninth place. Nagelkirk's ninth place swim shattered her previous school mark of
    23.97 in the event.

Seeded eighth heading into the morning preliminaries, Nagelkirk was hoping to
reach the championship finals and in the preliminary round, she came up with her
second fastest performance in the event, clocking in with a time of 23.99. The
time was only good for 10th place however, placing her in Thursday's consolation
finals. Nagelkirk's time of 23.99 was just four-tenths short of advancing her
    to Thursday's championship final.

"My feeling heading into the meet was that any time under 24 seconds in the
preliminaries would be fast enough to advance to the finals (top-eight)" said
Calvin women's swimming and diving coach Dan Gelderloos. "Obviously the rest of
the field stepped up and there is nothing you can do to control that. Katie
swam great in the preliminaries and she came up with a school record performance
tonight. You can't ask for anything more than that and I am very proud of her
    tonight."

Nagelkirk was also part of Calvin's 200 freestyle relay team that earned
honorable mention All-America recognition as the relay took 13th with a time of
1:37.55. Calvin had been seeded eighth in the event but finished 11th in the
prelims to move into the consolation finals. Joining Nagelkirk in the 200
freestyle relay were seniors Erin Kloostra (Grand Rapids Christian) and Kate
Conrad (Calvin Christian) and sophomore Brittney Stevens (Mankato, MN).

After one day , Calvin stands in 16th place with 17 points.

Calvin returns to action tomorrow on the second day of competition as Nagelkirk
will compete in the 200 freestyle and also swim on Calvin's 200 medley and 800
    freestyle relay teams.

    BASEBALL

Calvin stretched its win streak to three games and improved to 5-2 on the year
with a 5-3 victory over Jersey City College Thursday in Fort Myers, Florida.
The contest featured a battle of "Knights" as the Knights of Calvin went
head-to-head with the Gothic Knights of Jersey City College.

Calvin overcame a 3-2 deficit with three runs in the top of the fifth inning to
gain a 5-3 lead. Senior Matt Schmitz (Ionia) made the lead hold up as he threw
shutout ball over the final four innings to close out the first complete game
victory of his career. Schmitz (2-1) scattered six hits over seven innings of
work while striking out three and walking one. Calvin opened the scoring with a
run in the first as senior Ben Dykhouse (Grand Rapids Christian) delivered an
RBI double that scored freshman Tim Hansen (Ludington). The Knights added
another run in the second as freshman Josh Vriesman (Denver, CO) drew a one-out
walk and then scored on an RBI double by sophomore Bryce Weston (Petoskey).

Jersey City College (4-2) then scored three unearned runs in the bottom of the
third to take a 3-2 lead before the Knights of Calvin came back with three runs
of their own in the top of the fifth. Voss and sophomore Darrell Heuker (Unity
Christian) came up with RBI singles in the Calvin uprising while Vrieman also
ripped an RBI double with two outs.

Calvin finished the game with 14 hits with Dykhouse, Vriesman, Weston and senior

    SOFTBALL

Calvin moved above the .500 mark with a pair of victories Thursday in Fort
Myers, Florida. The Knights (5-4) opened the day with a dramatic 5-4 win over
St. Ambrose (IA) and then topped Skidmore College (NY) 12-4 in a contest played
    late in the afternoon.

In the win over St. Ambrose, Calvin trailed 4-1 heading into the bottom of the
seventh. The Knights then rallied for four runs in the bottom of the seventh
including three with two outs to gain the come-from-behind win. Calvin scored
its first run in the seventh on a one-out single by senior Susannah Knust
(Grandville) that scored sophomore Keri Cole (Mason County Eastern). Calvin
then closed to within a run as freshman Laurel Sands (Rockford) stole home.
Junior Becky Austen (Pembroke, ON) then delivered a two-out two-run RBI single
    to win the game.

Freshman Kara Van Kooten (Anchorage, AK) pitched the first four innings for the
Knights with freshman Rachelle Heyboer (Fremont) coming on in relief for the
final three frames to gain the win in relief as she improved to 2-2 on the year.
Van Kooten struck out six batters and walked two in six innings of work while
Heyboer retired seven of the eight batters she faced.

Knust and junior Sandy Van Leeuwen (Unity Christian) had two hits for Calvin in
the win while Austen went 3-for-3 with three RBI's.

In its win over Skidmore, Calvin rapped out 15 hits and also took advantage of
three Skidmore errors to cruise to the win. Cole picked up the win for the
Knights to improve to 3-1 on the year as she struck out two batters and walked
one. Heyboer also threw two innings of relief. Junior Trisha Balkema
(Highland, IN) went 3-for-4 for Calvin in the win while Sands, Van Leeuwen, and
Heyboer all had two hits apiece.

Calvin will now break until Saturday when it faces Dordt (IA) in its spring trip
