    BASEBALL

Calvin improved to 4-2 on the season with a 10-8 win over North Carolina
Wesleyan Wednesday morning in Fort Myers, Florida. Calvin used a five-run sixth
inning rame to rally for the win as the Knights trailed 6-5 after five innings
of play. Freshman Josh Vriesman (Denver, CO) aided the sixth-inning rally for
Calvin with an RBI double and junior Tim Voss () followed two batters later with
a two-run RBI double. Later that inning, senior Mark Jansen (Denver, CO)
delivered a two-out two-run RBI double to score Voss and sophomore Dean Thompson
(West Branch) to give the Knights a 10-6 edge. North Carolina Wesleyan then
rallied for two runs in the bottom of the sixth to close to within 10-8. Calvin
senior Mike Ott (Grand Rapids Union) then came on in relief in the seventh to
retire the side in order and gain the save. Senior Matt Schmitz (Ionia) picked
up the win in relief of freshman Jay Stringer (Annondale, VA) who was making his
first collegiate start. With the win, Schmitz evened his record at 1-1 on the
year. Stringer threw four innings of shutout ball in his collegiate debut
before tiring in the fifth where he allowed six runs of which only two were
    earned.

Vriesman continued his strong work at the plate for Calvin in the win as he
went 3-for-3 with two runs scored. Senior Ben Dykhouse (Grand Rapids Christian)
also broke loose at the plate as he went 2-for-4 with three RBI's including a
three-run homer over the right field wall in the fourth. Senior Mike Noorman
(Covenant Christian) and sophomore Aaron Griffith (Manhattan, KS) also picked up
two hits apiece with Griffith ripping a triple in the second inning. Calvin
finished with 11 hits in the contest but was also charged with three errors
    defensively.

Calvin returns to action on Thursday when it faces New Jersey City University
    at 1:00 p.m..

    SOFTBALL

Calvin split a pair of games Wednesday in Fort Myers, Florida, to move to 3-4
on the year. Calvin opened the day with a 7-1 loss to nationally-ranked Wheaton
of Massachusetts and then came back to top Elms College of Massachusetts 9-1 in
a game shortened to five innings because of the mercy-rule.

In its loss to Wheaton, Calvin took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning
on an RBI single by sophomore Trisha Balkema (Highland, IN) that scored senior
Lyndsay Heinkel (Milwaukee, WI) who led off the game with a double. Wheaton
(6-1) came back to tie the game with a run in the bottom of the fourth and then
added three runs in the fifth and three in the sixth to take control of the
game. Wheaton collected 10 hits in the win while Calvin managed just three hits
off of Wheaton pitcher Jackie Demling who struck out six and walked two.

Sophomore Keri Cole (Mason County Eastern) took the loss for Calvin to fall to
2-1 on the year as she struck out one and walked four in six innings of work.

In its win over Elms (1-5) later that afternoon, Calvin trailed 1-0 heading
into the bottom of the fourth before the Knights erupted for six runs, banging
out seven hits and using three errors by the Elms defense. Calvin then put the
game away in the fifth with three runs with junior Becky Austen (Pembroke, ON)
striking the key blow with a two-run RBI single up the middle. Freshman
Rachelle Heyboer (Fremont) picked up her first collegiate victory in the contest
as she struck out nine and walked one in five innings of work while allowing
