    Calvin Spring Sports Report for Games on Tuesday, March 12, 2002

    BASEBALL

    Calvin split a doubleheader with Wittenberg University Tuesday afternoon and
    evening in Fort Myers, Florida, falling 12-5 in the opener before coming back
    for a 4-0 win in the nightcap. The Calvin victory in game two marked the first
    loss of the year for Wittenberg (5-1).

    In the opener Calvin (3-2) fell behind 6-1 after two innings and never got back
    within striking distance as the Tigers banged out nine hits and reaped the
    benefits of 12 walks from the Calvin pitching staff. Senior Andy Miedema (Unity
    Christian) took the loss for the Knights while freshman Ryan Smith (Midland) and
    senior James Cottier (Denver, CO) also saw time on the mound for Calvin. Calvin
    picked up eight hits in defeat senior Mike Noorman (Covenant Christian) and
    sophomores Darrell Heuker (Unity Christian) and Terry O’Neal (Muskegon Reeths
    Puffer) all collecting two hits apiece for the Knights. Senior Ben Dykhouse
    also collected a double.

    In the nightcap, freshman righthander Jim Deters (Kalamazoo Christian) came up
    with a gem, tossing a five-hit shutout in his first collegiate start. Deters
    also struck out 13 Wittenberg batters while walking just one. Calvin gave
    Deters all the support he would need with three runs in the bottom of the first
    as Heuker drove in two runs with an RBI double down the left-field line and
    freshman Josh Vriesman (Denver, CO) added an RBI single two batters later.
    Calvin added an insurance run in the sixth as sophomore Dean Thompson (West
    Branch) drove in Dykhouse from third base with an RBI single. In the top of the
    seventh, Deters allowed a lead-off double but then bore down to strike out three
    straight batters to gain his first collegiate victory. Vriesman picked up two
    of Calvin’s five hits in the win with Dykhouse collecting his second double of
    the day.

    Calvin returns to action on Wednesday morning when it faces North Carolina
    Wesleyan at 9:00 a.m..

    SOFTBALL

    Calvin split a pair of games in Fort Myers, Florida, Tuesday to move to 2-3 on
    the season. Calvin opened the day with a 17-8 win over Marycrest (IA) and then
    fell 1-0 to Marian (IN) in an afternoon contest. In the win over Marycrest,
    Calvin cranked out 16 hits with six players recording two hits. Senior Lyndsay
    Heinkel (Milwaukee, WI) was a catalyst in the offensive outburst as she went
    2-for-4 with three RBI’s including a run-scoring double. Also collecting two
    hits for the Knights were senior Susannah Knust (Grandville), sophomore Keri
    Cole (Mason County Eastern), sophomore Rachel Dyksterhouse (Kalamazoo Christian)
    and freshmen Laurel Sands (Rockford) and Sarah Piersma (Grand Rapids Christian).
     Sands also had a double and three RBI’s in the win while Knust, Dyksterhouse
    and junior Becky Austen (Pembroke, ON) were all credited with two RBI’s. Cole
    picked up the pitching victory to up her record to 2-0 on the year.

    In its game against Marian, Calvin received another strong pitching performance
    from freshman Rachelle Heyboer (Fremont) but could manage only one hit against
    Marian pitcher T.J. Lambert. Heyboer (0-2) struck out three batters and walked
    one with Marian (9-1) scoring its only run of the game in the top of the
    seventh, using a lead-off double and a run-scoring single for the winning
    margin.

    Calvin returns to action on Wednesday when it faces Wheaton (MA) in a 9:00 a.m.
    contest and then meets Elms College at 1:00 p.m..

    WOMEN’S TENNIS

    Calvin dropped to 0-2 on the year with a 7-2 loss to regionally-ranked Carthage
    Tuesday in Hilton Head, South Carolina. The Knights will face Agnes Scott
    College Wednesday afternoon at noon.
