Calvin Sports Report for March 11, 2002

    BASEBALL

Calvin split a doubleheader with Salve Regina University of Rhode Island Monday
afternoon in Fort Myers, Florida, to improve to 2-1 on the year. In the opener,
Calvin dropped a 7-6 decision despite outhitting the opposition 11-6. Calvin
committed four errors in the one-run loss that led to a pair of unearned runs in
the bottom of the sixth inning that allowed Salve Regina to take a 7-6 lead.
Calvin then threatened in the top of the seventh but could not push across the
tying run. Senior Matt Schmitz (Ionia) took the pitching loss, striking out
three and walking three in four and a third innings of work while senior James
Cottier (Denver, CO) came on in relief. Sophomore Aaron Griffith (Manhattan,
KS) collected three hits in four trips to the plate while sophomore outfielder
Terry O'Neal (Muskegon Reeths Puffer) had a break-out game, belting a pair of
home runs, belting a solo shot in the fifth and a two-run blast in the sixth.
The roundtrippers were the first two of O'Neal's collegiate career.

In game two, Calvin came back for a 5-2 victory behind a complete-game pitching
performance from senior righthander Mike Ott (Grand Rapids Union) who scattered
five hits in seven inings of work while striking out nine and walking just one
batter. Holding a 3-2 lead through five innings, Calvin added a pair of
insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth with sophomore Darrell Heuker (Unity
Christian) providing the key blow with a two-run RBI single. Calvin picked up
10 hits in the win with O'Neal continuing his red-hot work at the plate with
three hits while senior Mark Jansen (Denver, CO) went 2-for-4 with a pair of
    RBI's.
Ott picked up the pitching victory to run his record to 2-0 on the year.

Calvin returns to action on Tuesday when it faces Wittenberg University in a
doubleheader scheduled to start at 4:00 pm.

    SOFTBALL

Calvin saw its record dip to 1-2 on the year as the Knights suffered a 3-1 loss
to Wheaton of Massachusetts and a 6-1 defeat to Salve Regina (RI) University
Monday in Fort Myers, Florida. In the loss to Wheaton, Calvin stranded nine
base runners as freshman Rachelle Heyboer (Fremont) took the hard-luck loss in
her collegiate debut. Heyboer fanned four and walked none in six innings of
work while allowing six hits. Calvin picked up five hits in the loss with
sophomore Tricia Balkema (Highland, IN) collecting the only extra-base hit for
    the Knights with a double.

In its loss to Salve Regina, Calvin freshman Kara Van Kooten (Anchorage, AK)
suffered the pitching defeat in her collegiate debut as she allowed six earned
runs in five innings of work. Sophomore Keri Cole (Mason County Eastern) hurled
the final two innings in relief. Junior catcher Emily Mejeur (Kalamazoo
Christian) picked up two of Calvin's four hits. Calvin also received five
walks on the afternoon but stranded eight runners.

Calvin returns to action on Tuesday morning when it faces Marycrest (IA) at
9:00 a.m. and then meets Marian (IN) at 1:00 p.m..

    WOMEN'S TENNIS

    A youthful Calvin women's tennis team dropped a hard-fought 5-4 decision to

46-8 *. The jump by Senavoe was also an NCAA III provisional qualifying mark
which was not noted in the last Calvin Sports Report. Calvin has never had an
individual from its men's track and field team qualify for the NCAA III
Outdoor Track and Field championships in the triple jump.
