Calvin Sports Report for March 11, 2002
BASEBALL
Calvin split a doubleheader with Salve Regina University of Rhode Island Monday
afternoon in Fort Myers, Florida, to improve to 2-1 on the year. In the opener,
Calvin dropped a 7-6 decision despite outhitting the opposition 11-6. Calvin
committed four errors in the one-run loss that led to a pair of unearned runs in
the bottom of the sixth inning that allowed Salve Regina to take a 7-6 lead.
Calvin then threatened in the top of the seventh but could not push across the
tying run. Senior Matt Schmitz (Ionia) took the pitching loss, striking out
three and walking three in four and a third innings of work while senior James
Cottier (Denver, CO) came on in relief. Sophomore Aaron Griffith (Manhattan,
KS) collected three hits in four trips to the plate while sophomore outfielder
Terry O'Neal (Muskegon Reeths Puffer) had a break-out game, belting a pair of
home runs, belting a solo shot in the fifth and a two-run blast in the sixth.
The roundtrippers were the first two of O'Neal's collegiate career.
In game two, Calvin came back for a 5-2 victory behind a complete-game pitching
performance from senior righthander Mike Ott (Grand Rapids Union) who scattered
five hits in seven inings of work while striking out nine and walking just one
batter. Holding a 3-2 lead through five innings, Calvin added a pair of
insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth with sophomore Darrell Heuker (Unity
Christian) providing the key blow with a two-run RBI single. Calvin picked up
10 hits in the win with O'Neal continuing his red-hot work at the plate with
three hits while senior Mark Jansen (Denver, CO) went 2-for-4 with a pair of
