CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR FEB. 23, 2002 (Part Two)

MEN'S AND WOMEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING

HOLLAND - Calvin claimed two more individual titles on the final day of
competition at the MIAA Championships along with one relay record as both teams
finished with solid Saturday evening efforts.

In the women's competition, Calvin finished second with 502 points, 86 points
behind first place Hope which reclaimed the league title from the Knights who
had posted a first place score of 552 points the year before.

In the men's competition, Calvin took third for the fourth consecutive year but
surpassed its point total from the year before as the Knights chalked up 370.5
points, three-and-a-half points better than its 2001 performance of 367 points.
Hope took second with 560 points while Kalamazoo captured its seventh straight
league crown, posting a first place score of 657.50 points.

In the women's competition, Calvin junior Katie Nagelkirk (Holland Christian)
captured her third individual title and defended her title in the 100 yard
freestyle with a school-record and NCAA III B' cut qualifying time of 52.57.
Nagelkirk's time surpassed the prevoius Calvin record of 52.79 set by Kristi
VanWoerkom in 1999 and it also marked the second school record of the week for
    Nagelkirk.

Nagelkirk was part of a 1-3-5 Calvin finish in the 100 freestyle as senior Erin
Kloostra (Grand Rapids Christian) took third (54.26) and senior Kate Conrad
    (Calvin Christian) took fifth (54.46).

Nagelkirk then led off Calvin's 400 freestyle relay team that included Conrad,
junior Mara McGuin (Oak Park, IL) and Kloostra. The relay captured first place
with an NCAA III B' cut qualifying time of 3:34.37.

In the 200 breaststroke, sophomore Brittney Stevens (Mankato, MN) had a huge
performance, taking second place with a school-record time of 2:30.43, finishing
just three-tenths of a second behind league champion Kelly Parker of Hope. The
time by Stevens shattered the oldest swimming record still left in the Calvin
books as it surpassed the previous record of 2:31.22 established by Stephanie
Rhind in 1988. Close behind Stevens was junior Megan Bagnall (Elgin, IL) who
was fourth in 2:33.56. Calvin also received a fourth place swim from McGuin in
the 200 butterfly as she clocked in with a time of 2:20.89.

Other top-six individual efforts for the Calvin women included junior Jenny Los
(Holland Christian) who took fourth in the 1,650 freestyle (18:47.28); freshman
Katie Oberle (Grand Rapids Christian) who was fourth in the 200 backstroke
(2:15.48); junior Allison Gliesman (Macomb) who was fifth in the 200 back
(2:18.54) and freshman Courtney Bechler (Holt) who was sixth (2:18.94).

In the men's competition, Calvin freshman Peter Boumgarden (Naperville, IL)
picked up his second MIAA title in as many nights while shattering his own
school record in the process as he took first place in the 200 butterfly with an
NCAA III B' cut qualifying time of 1:53.45. Boumgarden's time surpassed his
previous mark of 1:54.69 set back in early December.

In the 200 breaststroke, Calvin freshman Ryan Preston (Richmond, IN) also
shattered his second school record in as many nights as he clocked in with a
four place time of 2:11.29, shattering the previous school mark of 2:12.75 set
by Gary Goosen in 1999. The record breaking continued for Calvin in the 100
freestyle as junior A.J. Penninga (Grand Rapids Christian) and sophomore Brad
White (Dayton, OH) both surpassed the previous school mark of 46.70 set by White
last year as Penninga took second with an NCAA III B' cut qualifying time of
46.40 while White was third with a B' cut qualifying time of 46.60.

Calvin's other top six individual efforts came from junior Jake VanderPlas
(Palo Alto, CA) who took sixth in the 200 backstroke (2:01.40) and junior Dan
Hekman (Calimesa, CA) who took third in the 1,650 freestyle (16:49.11).

Calvin's 400 freestyle relay team of Penninga, Boumgarden, White and senior
Kevin Hawkins (Oakdale, CA) also took third, just missing a school record with a
    time of 3:06.85.
