SPORTS REPORT FOR FRIDAY, DECEMBER 28

    MEN'S BASKETBALL

Calvin 74, Milwaukee School of Engineering 61

PALM BEACH, FL -- Calvin junior forward Jeremy Veenstra continued his
outstanding play and with it Calvin continued its winning ways as the
Knights picked up a 74-61 victory over Milwaukee School of Engineering
Friday night in a first round game of the Sailfish Palm Beach Classic.

Ranked 17th in the latest D3hoops.com poll, Calvin extended its winning
streak to three games with Friday night's victory.

A graduate of Kalamazoo Christian High School, Veenstra erupted for 31
points and ripped down 15 rebounds to notch his 19th career
double-double in the victory over the Raiders Friday night. Veenstra's
scoring total was just three points short of a career-high as he
converted 12-of-19 field goal attempts and nailed 7-of-9 attempts at the
line. He also added four assists, four steals and one blocked shot.

Veenstra's effort came on the heels of a 28-point, 15-rebound
performance against Defiance December 15 as the Knights were playing
their first game in 13 days Friday evening.

"Jeremy had a superior performance tonight," said Calvin men's
basketball coach Kevin Vande Streek. "I probably don't give him enough
credit sometimes but tonight he was terrific. Overall, I was pleased
with our team's effort. We were a little rusty after our layoff but the
effort was there which was pleasing to me."

After falling behind 13-5 in the opening moments, Calvin ripped off an
18-2 run to build a 23-15 lead midway through the first half. Calvin
would then lead 41-26 at halftime and maintain at least a nine-point
    lead throughout the second half.

Sophomore forward Chris Prins (Escondido, CA) added 12 points for Calvin
despite fouling out in only 13 minutes of playing time.

Zach Neimitz and Tezal McCain led the Raiders (5-8) with 14 points
    apiece.

Calvin shot 43.5 percent overall and held a 40-23 rebounding edge. The
Knights (8-3) were also strong at the free throw line, converting 81.0
percent (17-of-21) of their attempts at the charity stripe.

Calvin returns to action on Saturday when it faces Hannibal-LaGrange of
Missouri in a contest scheduled to begin at 1:00 pm.
