Veenstra Named MIAA Men’s Basketball Player of the Week
GRAND RAPIDS, MI – For the second time this year and for the sixth time
in his career, Calvin College junior Jeremy Veenstra has been named MIAA
Player of the Week in men’s basketball.
A native of Kalamazoo and a graduate of Kalamazoo Christian High School,
Veenstra led Calvin to its first road win of the year as the Knights
picked up a 77-73 victory at non-conference rival Defiance Saturday
afternoon.
In the Calvin victory, Veensta notched his 19th career double-double as
he recorded a season-high 28 points and 15 rebounds. The 6-6 forward
also collected a career-high seven blocked shots in the victory while
also dishing out five assists and picking up two steals. On the
afternoon, Veenstra was 12-of-20 from the field including one basket
from three-point range while hitting three-of-four attempts from the
free throw line.
Veenstra leads the MIAA in scoring and rebounding with averages of 21.0
points and 9.3 rebounds per-game. He is also averaging 3.9
assists-per-game and shooting 55.9 percent from the floor and 71.9
percent from the free throw line. Over the course of his three-year
career, Veenstra has amassed 1,218 points, 376 rebounds and 208 assists.
Ranked 19th in the latest D3hoops.com national poll, Calvin improved to
7-3 with Saturday’s victory.
Calvin returns to action on December 28 when it faces Milwaukee School
of Engineering at the Palm Beach Atlantic Holiday Classic in West Palm
Beach, Florida. Calvin’s game against Milwaukee School of Engineering
will begin at 5:00 pm. The Knights will complete the tournament on
December 29 when they face Hannibal-LaGrange of Missouri at 1:00 pm.
