CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR Wednesday, December 5
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
Calvin saw its four-game win streak come to an end as the Knights suffered a
57-54 defeat at Aquinas Wednesday night to drop to 5-3 on the season.
Despite struggling through its worst shooting performance of the season, Calvin
remained in contention for the majority of Wednesday night's contest as the
Knights trailed by double-digits just once.
After Calvin grabbed an early 6-3 lead, Aquinas (5-5) used a 10-2 run to build
a 13-8 advantage. Calvin crept to within three at 18-15 on a triple by freshman
Kristen McDonald (West Catholic) with 6:23 left in the half but the Saints then
rattled off eight unanswered points, using three Calvin turnovers in a
one-minute stretch to build a 26-15 lead. Calvin junior Tricia Dyk (Western
Michigan Christian) got the maroon and gold back into the contest with
back-to-back triples and McDonald followed moments later with her second
trifecta of the game to pull the Knights to within 28-24. Aquinas senior Mary
Bond closed out the half however with four straight points to put the Saints up
32-24 at halftime.
In the second period of play, Calvin crept to within three points at 41-38 on a
free throw by sophomore Liz Sietsema (Grand Rapids Christian) with 10:44
remaining but the Knights would get no closer as Aquinas converted five free
throw attempts in the final 54 seconds to hold off a Calvin comeback attempt.
Dyk swished in her fourth three-pointer at the final buzzer to close out the
game.
Dyk led Calvin in scoring with 16 points while Sietsema had 10. Junior Emily
Beard (Southfield Christian) added six points, 10 rebounds, three blocked shots
and a pair of steals while McDonald also had six points.
Aquinas was led by Bond who notched a double-double with 14 points and 14
rebounds while Heather Orr and Chris Koselansky had 10 points apiece.
The Aquinas victory allowed the Saints to split a pair of regular-season
meetings against Calvin as the Knights had handed Aquinas a 67-58 defeat at the
Van Andel Arena November 24.
Calvin finished with a season-low 32.8 percent (22-of-67) field goal clip and
committed 21 turnovers. Aquinas shot just 30 percent (18-of-60) but outscored
Calvin 19-2 at the free throw line as the Saints were 19-of-28 at the stripe
while Calvin was just 2-of-6. Aquinas also held a 51-41 rebounding advantage.
Calvin will now break for first semester exams and return to action December 28
when it meets Marion College of Indiana in a first round game of the Wittenberg
Holiday Kiwanis Classic in Springfield, Ohio. Wittenberg will meet Mount St.
Joseph in the other first round game.
