MEN'S AND WOMEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING
SATURDAY RECAP
Both Calvin swim teams posted fifth place finishes in a field of ten teams at
the Eastern Michigan Invitational this past weekend as the men's team recorded a
score of 285.5 points while the women posted a score of 248.5 points.
In Saturday's competition, the Calvin men shattered two school records and
posted three NCAA B' Cut qualifying times. A B' cut performance qualifies an
individual conditionally for the NCAA III Championships. If the performance is
among the allotted number of spots for the event the week of the NCAA III
Championships, the individual advances to the national meet. Over the course of
the weekend, the Calvin men's swim team shattered five school records and posted
five B' cut times.
Freshman Peter Boumgarden (Naperville, IL) broke his second Calvin record in as
many days Saturday night as he took first place in the 100 butterfly with an
NCAA III B' cut qualifying time of 50.37, breaking the previous record of 51.17
established by Mike Lubbers in 1996. Boumgarden was followed in the 100
butterfly by junior Ryan Johnson (Grand Haven) who took sixth with a time of
52.27.
In the 200 medley relay, Calvin's team of sophomore Brad White (Dayton, OH),
freshman Ryan Preston (Richmond, IN), Boumgarden and senior Kevin Hawkins
(Oakdale, CA) took fourth with a school record time of 1:36.11, shaving
four-tenths of a second off the previous school mark. Calvin's 800 freestyle
relay team of sophomore A.J. Penninga (Grand Rapids Christian), Johnson,
Boumgarden and White then took fourth with an NCAA III B' cut qualifying time of
6:54.56.
Other strong performances for Calvin included its 200 freestyle relay team which
placed third in 1:25.23 and White in the 50 freestyle who took sixth with a time
of 21.53. Preston also had a standout performance in the 100 breaststroke,
taking 13th with a time of 1:00.84, missing a school record by four tenths of a
second.
In the women's competition, junior Mara McGuin (Oak Park, IL) shattered a
seven-year old Calvin record in the 400 IM as she placed 11th with a time of
4:46.22, breaking the previous record by four-hundreths of a seconds. McGuin
also had a strong swim in the 500 freestyle, placing 16th with a time of
5:20.53. In the 100 breaststroke, Calvin received strong swims from sophomore
Amy Youngquist (Zeeland) and sophomore Brittney Stevens (Mankato, MN) as
Youngquist was 17th in 1:11.92 and Stevens 18th in 1:12.19.
Junior Katie Nagelkirk (Holland Christian) was strong for Calvin in the 50 and
200 freestyle events Saturday night, placing fifth in the 50 freestyle with a
time of 24.53 and seventh in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:57.66.
Nagelkirk's time in the 50 freestyle was a season-best and missed breaking her
own school record by eight hundredths of a second.
Other notable performances for the Calvin women included sophomore Sara TerHaar
(Bradenton, FL) who took sixth on the one-meter diving board (173.35) and
Calvin's 200 freestyle relay team of Nagelkirk, senior Kate Conrad (Calvin
Christian), freshman Courtney Bechler (Holt) and senior Erin Kloostra (Grand
Rapids Christian) that took fourth with a time of 1:38.84.
Both teams will now prepare for first semester exams and an upcoming training
trip to Florida. The Calvin squads will compete at an invitational in Coral
Springs, Florida, December 22.
MEN'S BASKETBALL
For the fifth time in his collegiate career, Calvin junior Jeremy Veenstra has
been named MIAA Player of the Week in men's basketball.
A native of Kalamazoo and a graduate of Kalamazoo Christian High School,
Veenstra scored 34 points and grabbed 18 rebounds last week as Calvin split a
pair of games, falling to Wheaton 69-63 Tuesday and defeating Ferris State 95-76
Saturday.
In its loss to Wheaton Tuesday night, Veenstra notched his 17th career
double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. In Saturday's victory over Ferris
State, he pumped in 24 points and grabbed eight rebounds. With his 24-point
effort Saturday, Veenstra moved past 1985 Calvin graduate Kyle VanderBrug and
into ninth place on the all-time Calvin scoring list. Veenstra has 1,148 points
in his career.
A 6-6 forward, Veenstra is averaging a team-leading 20.0 points and 8.9 rebounds
a game. Veenstra is also averaging 3.8 assists and 1.5 blocked shots-per-game.
Calvin returns to action Tuesday night when it travels to non-conference rival
Cornerstone for a 7:30 pm game at Cornerstone's Mol Arena. Calvin will carry a
5-2 record into Tuesday night's contest.
