MEN'S BASKETBALL
Calvin will bring a 3-0 record into the Fifth/Third Classic this weekend after
recording a 104-76 victory over Aquinas Tuesday night at the Calvin Fieldhouse.
The two cross-town rivals will turn around again and play Friday afternoon at
2:00 pm in a first round game of the Fifth/Third Classic held at the Van Andel
Arena.
Calvin scorched the Fieldhouse nets from three-point range in Tuesday night's
victory, connecting on 12-of-23 (52.2) three-point attempts overall including a
10-of-16 performance (62.5) in the first half. Holding a 22-16 lead with 11:48
left in the first half, Calvin proceeded to roll off a 24-4 scoring run over a
five-minute span to buildg a 26-point lead at 46-20. Calvin connected on six
three-point field goals in the run with sophomores Mike Natelborg (Highland, IN)
and Phil Visser (Unity Christian) draining a pair of triples apiece to help
ignite the run.
Calvin cruised from that point on to secure the lop-sided victory. Six Calvin
players notched double-digits in scoring with juniors Jeremy Veenstra (Kalamazoo
Christian) and Rob Dykstra (Tri-unity Christian) leading the way with 17 points
apiece. Dykstra also collected a game-high 10 rebounds to record his first
career double-double. Dykstra's rebounding and scoring totals were both
career-high efforts. Veenstra added seven rebounds and five assists. Sophomore
forward Chris Prins (Escondido, CA) was next with 16 points while sophomore
guard Rob Holleman (Chandler, MN) had 13 points including a 3-for-3 performance
from beyond the arc. Visser and Natelborg both reached career scoring highs as
well with 12 points apiece. Sophomore guard Josh Berghuis (Unity Christian)
also came up wtih a fine floor game, dishing out five assists and collecting six
rebounds and four steals. Sophomore guard Kevin Broene (Grand Rapids Christian)
chipped in with nine points.
Aquinas was led in scoring by sophomore guard K'Brio Kimble who recorded a
game-high 25 points along with four steals. Jason Aaerts added 14 points off
the bench while Derek Weaver had 10 points and seven rebounds.
Aquinas shot 39.4 percent overall and just 8 percent (1-of-12) from three-point
range. Calvin also outrebounded Aquinas 47-29.
Calvin's game against Aquinas on Friday will be preceeded by a game between
Cornerstone and Grand Valley State. Friday's winners will meet in the
championship game Saturday night at 8:00 pm with the losers to meet in the
consolation game Saturday night at 6:00 pm.
