WRAPUP FOR Saturday, November 17, 2001
MEN'S BASKETBALL
A stifling defensive effort propelled Calvin to the championship of its own
Calvin Tip-Off Tournament Saturday evening as the Knights defeated Aurora 82-49
in the championship tilt at the Calvin Fieldhouse. The victory also allowed
Calvin men's basketball coach Kevin Vande Streek to claim his 200th career
victory as a collegiate coach. In 12 years as a collegiate coach, Vande Stree
is now 200-112 for a winning percent of .641.
Calvin shot just 35 percent from the floor in the first half Saturday evening
but limited the visiting Spartans to just 25 percent shooting, en route to
taking a 36-26 halftime lead. Calvin then outscored Aurora 19-8 to open the
second half to put the game away early.
Junior forward Jeremy Veenstra (Kalamazoo Christian) was named the tournament's
MVP after collecting his 18th career double-double with a 24-point, 11-rebound
effort along with three blocked shots. Sophomore forward Chris Prins
(Escondido, CA) added 16 points, 8 boards and four steals while sophomore Kevin
Broene (Grand Rapids Christian) had eight points off the bench. In addition,
sophomore center Tony Westhouse (South Christian) came off the bench to block
four shots, score four points and grab four rebounds.
Prins was also named to the All-Tournament team for Calvin.
Calvin finished with a 44.4 percent field goal shooting performance including
53.1 percent overall. Aurora shot just 23.9 percent (16-of-67) overall
including just 23.9 percent in the second half.
Calvin will now prepare to host Aquinas Tuesday night at the Fieldhouse in a
game scheduled to begin at 7:30 pm.
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
Calvin dropped a 68-52 decision in the championship game of the Wilmington
College Classic Saturday afternoon in Wilmington, Ohio.
A poor first half placed the Knights in a hole that was too deep to dig out of
as Calvin trailed 48-27 at the break. Calvin outscored the opposition 25-20 in
the second half but it was not enough to keep from falling to defeat.
Senior forwad Tara Bergsma (Calvin Christian) scored 12 points off the bench to
lead the Knights and earned a spot on the all-tournament team. Sophomore guard
Kim Wolthuis (South Christian) was next for Calvin with nine points while junior
guard Tricia Dyk had seven points and four assists. Junior Emily Beard and
sophomore Katie Corner (Catholic Central) added six points and seven rebounds
apiece for the maroon and gold.
Calvin shot just 34 percent from the field and committed 24 turnovers.
The Knights return to action on Friday when they face Cornerstone University at
2:30 pm in a first round game of the Grand Rapids Press Tournament. Saginaw
Valley State and Aquinas will meet in the other first round game. Friday's
games will be played at the Aquinas College Fieldhouse.
Saturday's contests will be played at the Van Andel Arena in downtown Grand
Rapids. The consolation is set for the 1:00 pm Saturday with the championship
game set for 3:00 pm.
