MEN'S SWIMMING
Calvin split a pair of non-conference dual meets on the road over the weekend,
defeating Wayne State 123.5-107.5 Friday night before falling to Wheaton 136-87
Saturday afternoon. The Knights are now 2-2 on the dual meet season overall.
Freshman Peter Boumgarden of Naperville, Illinois highlighted Calvin's effort
Wayne State as he took first place in the 100 butterfly with an NCAA III
conditional qualifying time of 51.68. Boumgarden also took first place in the
200 freestyle and swam on Calvin's first place 200 medley relay team that
clocked in with a time of 1:38.51.
Senior Chris Clark (Traverse City) and sophomore Brad White (Dayton, OH) were
also double-winners for Calvin Friday evening. Clark was a winner in the 50
freestyle (22.55) and 100 freestyle (50.25) while White took first in the 400 IM
(4:44.60) and 100 backstroke (55.55). Calvin's 200 freestyle relay team of
Clark, senior Bryan Linn, sophomore Ryan Johnson and senior Kevin Hawkins also
cruised in to a first place time of 1:30.69.
In Saturday's competition at Wheaton, Calvin took first place in three events
with Boumgarden accounting for two of the swims. Boumgarden was a winner in the
200 butterfly (2:03.16) and 200 IM (1:59.18). Junior Dan Hekman (Calimesa, CA)
was the other winner for the Knights, taking first place in the 1000 yard
freestyle (10:16.05).
Calvin will now break for a few weeks and will return to action on November 30
and December 1 when it competes at the Eastern Michigan Invitational.
WOMEN'S SWIMMING
Calvin dropped a pair of non-conference dual meets on the road this weekend,
falling at Wayne State 132-108 Friday night and then losing 130-105 Saturday
afternoon.
In the meet at Wayne State Friday evening, junior Katie Nagelkirk (Holland
Christian) took first place in both the 200 freestyle (2:00.05) and 100
backstroke (1:04.11). Junior Anne Kuiper (Houghton) also won in the 100
breaststroke with a time of 1:11.35. Calvin also produced strong efforts in
both diving competitions as freshman Anna Battoclette (Cincinnati, OH) took
first on the one-meter board while freshman Melissa Huffman (Bay City) was first
on the three-meter board. Calvin swept both diving competitions with Huffman
and sophomore Sara TerHaar (Bradenton, FL) going 2-3 on the one-meter board and
TerHaar and Battoclette taking second and third respectively on the three-meter
board.
In the meet against Wheaton, Calvin took first place in three events with
Nagelkirk producing two of Calvin's first place swims individually. Nagelkirk
took first place in the 100 freestyle (54.55) and 50 freestyle (24.94).
Calvin's 400 freestyle relay team of Nagelkirk, seniors Erin Kloostra (Grand
Rapids Christian) and Kate Conrad (Calvin Christian) and freshman Courtney
Bechler (Holt) took first with a time of 3:45.44.
Calvin will now break for a few weeks and will return to action on November 30
and December 1 when it competes at the Eastern Michigan Invitational.
MEN'S BASKETBALL
More than 700 fans came out to watch the 2001-2002 edition of the Calvin men's
basketball team record a 121-101 exhibition game victory over Sugar's All-Stars
Saturday night at the Calvin Fieldhouse.
Calvin used a quick start to build a double-digit lead which it would build into
a 59-41 halftime lead. The Knights maintained their double-digit lead
throughout the second half and eventually pulled away to its 20-point margin.
Five Calvin players reached double-digits in scoring with junior All-American
candidate Jeremy Veenstra (Kalamazoo Christian) leading the way with 30 ponts,
nine rebounds and eight assists. Sophomore Chris Prins (Escondido, CA) was also
outstanding for the maroon and gold, producing 25 points, a game-high 12
rebounds and six assists. Sophomore guard Kevin Broene (Grand Rapids Christian)
was next with 19 points including a 3-of-3 performance from three-point range.
Sophomores Rob Holleman (Chandler, MN) and Phil Visser (Unity Christian) were
also in double-figures with Holleman scoring 13 points and Visser 10.
Former Central Michigan standout Melvin McLaughlin popped in 29 points for the
visitors while his nephew Eric McLaughlin of Akron University had 28. Recent
Central Michigan graduate Tim Kisner added 21 points while Grand Valley graduate
Dante Smith had 17 points.
As a team, Calvin connected on 66.1 percent of its field goal attempts including
64.7 percent (11-of-17) of its attempts from three-point range.
Calvin will officially open its season next Friday night when it hosts Orchard
Lake St. Mary's at 7:30 pm in the second game of its own Calvin Tip-Off
Tournament, MacMurray (IL) and Aurora (IL) will meet in the first game at 5:30
pm Friday evening.
