MEN'S SOCCER
KALAMAZOO, MI - Calvin edged closer to the end of its regular season with a 2-0
loss to Kalamazoo on Monday afternoon. The game was originally scheduled on
Tuesday, October 23 but moved to Monday because of wet playing conditions in
Kalamazoo. With the victory Kalamazoo clinches the MIAA outright and propels the
Hornets into the NCAA tournament for the second consecutive year. Kalamazoo
moves to 15-2 overall (10-0 MIAA) while Calvin drops to 10-6-2 overall (7-4
MIAA).
Kalamazoo received goals from junior Ross Bower and freshman Steve Dendler,
while Hornet goalie Nick Carlin-Voigt recorded the shutout.
Calvin returns to action on Wednesday, taking on Alma College at Calvin Field.
Kick-off is 3 PM.

MEN'S AND WOMEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING
Both Calvin swim teams opened their seasons Saturday at the Grand Valley Relays
with the Calvin men taking second with 122 points while the Calvin women were
third with 114 points.
In the men's competition, Calvin took first place in five relay events. In the
300 butterfly relay, Calvin's team of Ryan Johnson (Grand Haven), Bryan Linn
(Indianapolis, IN) and Peter Boumgarden (Naperville, IL) cruised to a first
place time of 2:40.82, finishing more than five seconds ahead of second place
Grand Valley. In the 300 breaststroke relay, Calvin's trio of Ryan Preston
(Richmond, IN), Kevin Katerberg (Dayton, OH) and Dan VanderHeide (Grand Rapids
Christian) clocked in with a time of 3:14.38, finishing more than four seconds
ahead of second place Grand Valley. Calvin's 800 freestyle relay also had a
solid outing as the quartet of Clark, Dan Hekman (Calimesa, CA), A.J. Penninga
(Grand Rapids Christian) and Brad White (Dayton, OH) took first with a time of
7:22.79, finishing seven seconds ahead of second place Wayne State.
In the 400 medley relay, Calvin's combination of Johnson, VanderHide, Boumgarden
and Penninga took first in 3:42.34. Calvin's 200 freestyle relay team of Clark,
Kevin Hawkins (Oakdale, CA), Boumgarden and White took first in 1:28.86,
finishing more than three seconds ahead of second place Grand Valley.
In the women's competition, Calvin took first place in three events. The first
victory for the Knights came in the 300 breaststroke relay as Brittney Stevens
(Mankato, MN), Amy Youngquist (Zeeland) and Anne Kuiper (Houghton) took first
with a time of 3:38.11. Calvin's 400 medley relay team of Katie Oberle (Grand
Rapids Christian), Youngquist, Kuiper and Katie Nagelkirk (Holland Christian)
then took first with a time of 4:16.93. Calvin's final first place performance
came in the 200 freestyle relay as Nagelkirk, Kate Conrad (Calvin Christian),
Courtney Bechler (Holt) and Erin Kloostra (Grand Rapids Christian) churned to a
first place time of 1:42.78.
Both teams will now prepare to open up their MIAA dual meet campaigns Saturday
afternoon at Hope. Saturday's dual meets will also include Olivet. The
competition is set to begin at 1:00 pm.
