    VOLLEYBALL

    Calvin took fifth with a 3-1 record at its own Midwest Invitational Saturday
    afternoon as it defeated Wheaton and Anderson in come-from-behind fashion.
    Calvin opened play on Saturday with a 19-30, 28-30, 30-26, 30-25, 15-11 win over
    Wheaton. The Knights then topped Anderson 30-16, 18-30, 26-30, 34-32, 15-13.

    In the win over Wheaton, Calvin was led by freshmen Kara Kuipers and Kristin
    DeGroot who chalked up 15 kills apiece. Kuiopers also picked up four blocks.
    Junior Melissa Pell added 14 kills while junior Laura Tucker (Holland Christian)
    came off the bench to provide a career-high 64 assists.

    Against Anderson, freshman Kathy Brenneman (North Muskegon) sparkled with 16
    kills and nine digs while junior Cassie Christopher (Fruitport) amassed 15 kills
    and 12 digs. Kuiper added seven kills and a career-high 10 blocks while DeGroot
    had 15 digs and Tucker 42 assists.

    Dordt captured the tournament title with a four-game victory over defending
    champion DePauw in the championship final.

    MEN'S AND WOMEN'S SWIMMING

    The Calvin men's and women's swimming and diving teams opened their seasons at
    the Grand Valley Relays. The Calvin men took second in a four-team field with
    122 points, finishing eight points behind first place Wayne State. The Calvin
    women took third in a four-team field with 114 points. Wayne State took first
    with 124 points while Grand Valley had 122 points.
