SPORTS REPORT FOR October 20, 2001

    MEN'S SOCCER

Calvin became just the second collegiate men's soccer program in the state of
Michigan to reach the 400-win plateau as the Knights defeated Albion on the road
3-0 Saturday afternoon. In 43 years of collegiate play, the Calvin men's soccer
team has compiled an overall won-loss record of 400-214-57 for a winning
percentage of .636. Calvin joins Michigan State University as the only two
college men's soccer programs in the state of Michigan to record 400 wins or
more. The Spartans reached the 400-win plateau earlier this fall.

Sophomore Sam DeYoung (Western Michigan Christian) had a big day for Calvin in
the historic win with a goal and an assist. DeYoung helped put Calvin on the
board in the first half as he assisted on a goal by sophomore Mike Standfest
(Elk Rapids) in the 32nd minute. Sophomore Marcus Decker (Grand Rapids
Christian) gave Calvin a two-goal lead on a goal in the 77th minute off an
assist from sophomore Eric Krauss (Grosse Pointe). DeYoung then scored his
third goal of the year with just over 10 minutes left to play, converting a pass
from senior Peter Knoester (Grand Rapids Christian).

Calvin outshot the Britons (5-8-2 overall, 3-5-1 MIAA) 10-6. Senior Matt
Thelen (Grand Haven) recorded his 43rd career victory in goal for the Knights
including his 17th career shutout win with five saves.

Calvin returns to action on Tuesday when it travels to nationally-ranked and
league-leading Kalamazoo for a game slated to start at 4:00 pm.

    WOMEN'S SOCCER

Calvin was unable to slow down Albion's undefeated season as the
nationally-ranked Britons defeated the Knights 4-1 Saturday afternoon at Calvin
Field. The nationally-ranked Britons were able to use their height to their
advantage by keeping the ball in the air, preventing the Knights from linking up
their passing game on the ground.

Albion (16-0 overall, 11-0 MIAA) controlled the tempo from the outset and
nearly scored on two separate occasions in the opening five minutes of play.
Albion's Laurie Vance then broke a scoreless tie when she able to get her foot
on a rebound shot and slide it into a wide-open Calvin goal in the 22nd minute.
Lauren Gentry then tallied for the Britons in the 30th minute as a clearing
attempt by Calvin ricocheted directly off Gentry's foot and sailed over Calvin
goaltender Leah VanderPloeg (Unity Christian) and into the net.

The Britons finished the game with 10 corner kicks and successfully converted
their seventh corner into a goal moments into the second half as 6-1 senior
Amanda Yeager sent a perfectly-placed header to the far corner of the Calvin
goal off a corner kick from Sarah Pike.

Trailing 3-0, Calvin finally broke through in the 74th minute as junior forward
Tricia Dyk (Western Michigan Christian) took a pass from junior Heather VanVugt
(Brookfield, WI) and booted in a low shot to the far post past Albion keeper
Erica Williams. The Britons answered one more time however as Gentry blasted in
a shot from point-blank range with just 1:28 left to play on an assist from Liz
    Hermiller.

The defending MIAA champion Britons improved to 16-0 overall and to 11-0 in the
MIAA with the win while snapping Calvin's six-game win streak in the process.
Calvin outshot Albion 11-10 but the Britons held a 6-4 advantage in the first
half when they pushed the Knights into a two-goal deficit. The Britons also
finished with 10 corner kicks to Calvin's three and threatened on several corner
kick opportunities. Williams finished with four saves in goal for Albion while
VanderPloeg had two saves in the first half for Calvin while freshman Kristy
Jamieson (Aurora, CO) had two saves for the Knights in the second half of play.

Despit the loss, Calvin (13-5 overall, 9-3 MIAA remained two points behind
second place Kalamazoo (10-2 MIAA) in the conference standings as the Hornets
were upset by Hope 2-1 Saturday afternoon. Calvin will host Kalamazoo Tuesday
    at 4:00 pm.
