MEN'S AND WOMEN'S TRACK AND FIELD
A group of Calvin athletes came up with huge performances at the Len Paddock Invitational Saturday afternoon at the University of Michigan, helping build momentum for the upcoming NCAA III Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
In the women's competition Calvin produced an unprecedented three NCAA III automatic qualifying performances in the 400 meters with two-time defending national champion Megan Pierce (Fort Wayne, IN) leading the way with a first place time of 54.15. Her time is the fastest time in Division III women's track and field this spring in the 400 and is the second fastest time of her career in the event. Pierce was one of three Calvin athletes to qualify automatically as senior Sara Veltkamp (Grand Rapids Christian) was third with an automatic qualifying time of 56.56 while senior Lindsay Mulder (Calvin Christian) was fourth with an automatic qualifying time of 56.59.
Junior Mindy Worst (Grand Rapids Christian) was close behind as she took fifth in 58.21 while freshman Dana Haan (Lynden, WA) was ninth in 59.20.
Mulder also uncorked the biggest leap of her long jump career on Saturday as she took first place with a third place and NCAA III automatic qualifying jump of 19-3 ½. Mulder's jump is just the second 19-foot jump in Calvin women's track and field history, surpassed only by the school record and national championship mark of 19-11 ½ established by Angie Feinauer at the 1993 NCAA III Championships at Baldwin-Wallace College. Mulder's jump Saturday matches the second-best mark in Division III women's track and field this spring.
In addition, Calvin's 4 x 400 meter relay team of Pierce, Mulder, Worst and Veltkamp took first place with an NCAA III automatic qualifying time of 3:45.14. The time is the fastest in Division III women's track and field this spring.
