Volkers named to Great Lakes All-Region second team
GRAND RAPIDS, MI - Calvin senior Rhonda Volkers has been named to the Division
III Great Lakes All-Region second team in softball.
A native of Zeeland and a graduate of Holland Christian High School, Volkers is
receiving all-region softball accolades for the third time in her career as she
was named to the third team in 1998 and to the second team in 1999. It also
marks the sixth time in her Calvin athletic career that she has received
all-region honors as she has also been named to the Division III Great Lakes
All-Region team in volleyball three times.
A four-year starter in the outfield including a three-year starter in
centerfield, Volkers did not commit an error this spring as she compiled 59
putouts and five outfield assists for a perfect fielding percentage of 1.000.
At the plate, Volkers finished second on the team in batting average with a .311
mark, collecting 33 hits in 105 trips to the plate. She also finished with 17
runs scored and 14 RBI's while also belting seven extra-base hits including two
homeruns.
Over the course of her Calvin softball career, Volkers compiled a .334 batting
average, collecting 132 hits in 395 trips to the plate. She was also credited
with 30 extra-base hits as she recorded 24 doubles, three triples and three
homeruns.
In conference games, Volkers finished with 62 career hits, placing her in a tie
for fourth place on the all-time MIAA hits list.
CALVIN SOFTBALL PLAYERS NAMED TO ALL-MIAA TEAMS
Three members of the Calvin softball team have received All-MIAA honors. Senior
Erin Dyksterhouse has been named to the All-MIAA first team while senior Rhonda
Volkers and junior Susannah Knust have been named to the All-MIAA second team.
A two-year starter at first base, Dyksterhouse is making her first appearance on
the All-MIAA first team after receiving All-MIAA second team honors as a junior.
Dyksterhouse hails from Kalamazoo and is a graduate of Kalamazoo Christian High
School. Dyksterhouse finished 11th in the MIAA batting race this spring,
batting .385 in league games. Overall, Dyksterhouse finished with a .264
batting average while collecting 13 RBI's and 11 runs scored. She was also
stellar defensively, committing just two errors in more than 230 chances for a
superb .992 fielding percentage.
Volkers is from Zeeland and is a graduate of Holland Christian High School. A
four-year starter in the outfield, Volkers is receiving all-conference accolades
for the third time in her career as she was named to the All-MIAA first team in
1998 and 1999. This spring, Volkers batted .279 in conference games along with
two homeruns, seven RBI's and seven runs scored as she finished tied for 10th in
the MIAA in RBI's. With 12 hits in conference games this spring, Volkers
boosted her career MIAA hits total to 62, placing her in a tie for fourth place
on the all-time MIAA hits list.
Knust hails from Grandville and is a graduate of Grandville High School. A
three-year starter at the designated player position for the Knights, Knust
finished 22nd in the MIAA batting race with a .313 conference average while also
finishing 10th in total bases (19) and tied for 10th in RBI's (7). Overall,
Knust compiled a .310 batting average and led Calvin in hits with 35.
Sophomore Becky Austen also received honorable mention recognition from the MIAA
coaches. A native of Pembroke, Ontario and a graduate of Fellewes High School,
Austen finished 18th in the MIAA batting race with a .323 batting average while
also serving as Calvin's shortstop.
Calvin finished the year 14-22 overall and tie for sixth in the MIAA with a 4-10
conference mark.
