BASEBALL
Calvin stretched its win streak to five games with a dramatic 5-4 victory over non-conference rival Aquinas Thursday afternoon at Calvin Field. Trailing 4-3, Calvin (15-8) rallied for two runs with one out in the bottom of the ninth to gain the win. With one out, freshman catcher Darrell Heuker (Unity Christian) started the rally with a single to left-center. Junior Mike Noorman (Covenant Christian) replaced Heuker as a pinch-runner and promptly moved to third as junior Matt DeHoek (Grand Rapids Christian) continued his hot hitting streak with a double off the left-field wall. Freshman Terry O'Neal (Muskegon Reeths-Puffer) then ran for DeHoek at second base.
Senior Ross Hunderman (Holland Christian) then drove in Noorman from third base with a high chopper that was bobbled by the first baseman, allowing Hunderman to reach safely and moving O'Neal to third. Senior Jason TeBos (Calvin Christian) then came up with the game-winner, blasting a shot off the leftfield fence that scored O'Neal with the game-winning run.
The victory was the first Calvin win over Aquinas in baseball in more than 10 years.
Aquinas (27-7) broke a scoreless tie with four runs in the top of the fourth as the Saints used a two-out rally to tag Calvin with a 4-0 deficit. Calvin came back with a run in the sixth as back-to-back doubles fromTeBos and junior Mark Jansen (Denver, CO) erased the Aquinas shutout bid.
In the seventh, Calvin came up with two runs as Heuker scored on a passed ball and DeHoek scored on an RBI single by TeBos.
Junior Matt Schmitz (Ionia) then came on in relief of junior starter Andy Miedema (Unity Christian) in the eighth and proceeded to throw two scoreless frames, extending his shutout streak to 11 innings. Schmitz picked up the win in relief to bump his record to an unblemished 4-0 on the year. Miedema went the first seven innings and struck out four batters while walking two and allowing nine hits.
Calvin finished with nine hits of its own with TeBos leading the charge as he went 3-for-5 with two RBI's while Heuker and DeHoek were both 2-for-4.
Calvin will open a three-game MIAA conference series on Friday with a single nine-inning game at Kalamazoo scheduled to begin at 4:00 pm.
