Calvin 16th in Latest Sears Director's Cup Standings

GRAND RAPIDS, MI -- Calvin College is 16th in the latest Sears Director's Cup
Division III standings with 305 points. The Sears Director's Cup is based on
points earned by teams that compete in NCAA Championship events and is presented
annually by the National Association of Collegiate Director's of Athletics
(NACDA) to the best overall collegiate athletics program in the country. The
Sears Director's Cup race is held at the NCAA I, II and III levels and also for
    NAIA institutions.

Points are awarded based on each institution=s finish in NCAA III Championship
competition in up to 18 sports -- nine for men and nine for women. Each
national champion receives 100 points with a national runner-up finish worth 90
points. Third place is worth 80 points and fourth place finishes count for 75
points with a sliding point scale continuing on down by order of finish.

Calvin earned 161 points during the winter sports season with its men's
basketball team earning 30 points; its women's swim team earning 65 points and
its men's swim team earning 66 points. The men's basketball reached the second
round of the NCAA III Tournament while the women's swim team finish 19th and the
men's swim team 18th at the NCAA III Swimming and Diving championships. Calvin
also earned 144 points during the fall with the men's cross country team
receiving 100 points for its national championship performance while the women's
cross country team picked up 44 points for its 14th place finish at the NCAA III
    Championships.

The College of New Jersey currently leads the Sears Director's Cup standings at
the NCAA Division III level with 597.5 points, 14 points ahead of four-time
champion Williams College of Massachusetts. Williams captured the 1999-2000
Sears Director's Cup competition for the fourth time in five years with a total
of 849 points. Calvin finished sixth in the final 1999-2000 standings with a
total of 561 points for its best-ever finish in the Sears Director's Cup chase.
Calvin's finish a year ago also marked its fifth consecutive top-25 Sears
Director's Cup finish. Since the Sears Director's Cup was initiated at the NCAA
Division III level for the 1995-96 academic year, Calvin is one of only 12
schools to finish in the top-25 all five years. Joining Calvin in the group are
Williams (MA), UC-San Diego, College of New Jersey, Amherst (MA), Middlebury
(Vt), Ithaca (NY), Wisconsin-LaCrosse, SUNY-Cortland, Emory (Ga.), Rowan (N.J.)
    and St. Thomas (MN).

This is the sixth year for the Sears Director's Cup chase at the NCAA III
level. Calvin also finished 7th during the 1998-99 season with 350 points; 25th
during the 1997-98 season with 200 points; 22nd for the 1996-97 season with
321.5 points and 11th during the 1995-96 campaign with 425 points.
