    REPORT FOR APRIL 2, 2001

    SOFTBALL

Calvin picked up two more losses Monday afternoon, losing both ends of the doubleheader to nationally ranked Grand Valley 5-3, 9-1. The pair of setbacks extends Calvin's losing streak to six games.

In the first game Calvin could not get the offense it was looking for to back up the solid pitching by freshman Keri Cole (Mason County Eastern). Grand Valley got on the board first and piled two runs on the board with good base running and timely singles. The lead would not hold, however, as freshman Calvin slugger Rachel Dyksterhouse (Kalamazoo Christian) connected with a three-run homer in the 4th inning over the left field fence that gave the Knights a 3-2 lead. The homer was the third of the spring for Dyksterhouse. Grand Valley continued to pick away at the lead getting two in the top of the fifth and one in the top of the seventh to propel its way to victory 5-3. Calvin ended the game with six hits, but went hitless after the 4th inning rally. Cole picked up the loss for the Knights and dropped to 4-3 on the year. Amanda Castonguay picked up the win for GVSU, and improved to 10-1.

The nightcap belonged to the Lakers (24-1-1) right from the start as they piled on three runs in the 1st inning and never looked back as they cruised to a 9-1 victory. Grand Valley had 9 runs on 10 hits, while Calvin (6-9) picked up 1 run on 4 hits. Nadira Saafir picked up the win for the Lakers as she improved to 2-0 while Calvin pitcher Erin Osgerby (Caledonia) picked up the loss to fall to 2-3 on the year.

Calvin returns to action Wednesday afternoon as it will travel to Kalamazoo to take on the Hornets in a conference double header scheduled to start at 3:30.

    MEN'S TENNIS

GRCC took the first two singles flights but Calvin captured the remaining four singles flights and all three doubles flights to record the win.
