REPORT FOR MARCH 30, 2001
BASEBALL
Calvin used the strong right arm of senior Mike Ott and the big bat of senior
lefthander Aaron Wiers (Chicago, IL) to record a 4-1 victory over Olivet in the
MIAA opener for both teams Friday afternoon at Calvin Field.
Ott (Grand Rapids Union) went the distance to pick up the victory as he allowed
just two Olivet hits while striking out five and walking one to even his record
at 1-1. Wiers led an eight-hit Calvin attack as he went 3-for-4 at the plate
with an RBI double while also scoring a pair of runs.
Calvin (5-6 overall, 1-0 MIAA) picked up a run in the second inning as Wiers led
off with a single, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by junior Andrew Drake
(Marion, OH) and then scored on an RBI single to right by junior Ben Dykhouse.
The Knights then scored three unearned runs in the third as junior Matt DeHoek
(Grand Rapids Christian) led off the inning by reaching base on a throwing
error. Senior Dirk Eppinga (Walnut Creek, CA) then delivered DeHoek from second
base with an RBI single to left-center and then was brought home by a booming
double to right by Wiers that smacked high off the fencer near the 365 foot
marker. Wiers then scored the third running of the inning on RBI double down
the left-field line by Drake.
Olivet (5-6 overall, 0-1 MIAA) picked up its lone run in the top of the fourth,
using a pair of Calvin errors and a sacrifice fly catcher Darren Rowe to spoil
Ott's shutout bid. With his pitching performance Friday, Ott lowered his
three-year career earned-run average in MIAA play to a sparkling ERA of 2.05.
The two teams return to action Saturday when they square off in a conference
doubleheader at Calvin Field slated to start at 1:00 pm.
