REPORT FOR MARCH 28, 2001
SOFTBALL
Calvin suffered two non-conference losses to Aquinas Wednesday afternoon
falling in the first game of the double header 9-1, and 4-3 in the second game.
Calvin (6-5) held the Saints (15-7) scoreless until the fifth inning where poor
fielding hurt the Knights. Aquinas scored seven runs on four hits, while Calvin
aided with 4 errors. The Saints went on to mercy-rule the Knights 9-1 by picking
up 2 runs in the 6th inning. Freshman Keri Cole (Mason County Eastern) picked up
the loss for the Knights, giving up 9 runs on 11 hits, while only allowing 4
earned runs.
In the second game Calvin jumped out to a 2-0 lead with a double by senior
Rhonda Volkers (Holland Christian) that scored freshman Trisha Balkema
(Highland, IN) and a 2nd inning solo home run by freshman Rachel Dyksterhouse
(Kalamazoo Christian). Calvin held a 3-2 lead going into the 6th inning but
could not quiet the bats of the Saints, as Aquinas knocked in two runs and won
the game 4-3.
Volkers led the way for the Knights as she went 3-4 from the plate, knocking in
2 RBI's. Balkema collected 2 hits and scored twice. Sophomore Erin Osgerby
(Caledonia) took the loss for Calvin to fall to 1-2 on the year.
Calvin will return to action Saturday afternoon when it hosts a
conference-opening double-header with Alma College. The first pitch is scheduled
to be thrown at 1 PM.
BASEBALL
Calvin matched the visiting Timberwolves of Northwood in the amount of hits but
not in the amount of runs as the Knights dropped a 7-2 decision Wednesday
afternoon at Calvin Field. The Division II Timberwolves (10-8) used extra-base
hits to score single runs in the second and third inning and then added a third
run in the fourth and three more in the fifth to take a 7-0 lead.
Calvin (4-6) scratched across a pair of runs in the ninth inning as freshman
Darrell Heuker (Unity Christian) doubled and later scored on a wild pitch.
Freshman Aaron Griffith (Manhattan, KS) then delivered an RBI single to score
sophomore Mark Koldenhoven (Burr Ridge, IL) to close out the scoring.
Both teams finished with nine hits but the Timberwolves were able to capitalize
with six extra-base hits including back-to-back-to-back doubles in the fifth
that helped spark the three-run Northwood inning. Senior Aaron Wiers (Chicago,
IL) went the first two innings in taking the loss to fall to 1-2 on the year.
Wiers was sharp despite taking the loss as he allowed just one hit and one run
while striking out three of the seven batters he faced. Senior Ryan Wolthuis
(South Christian), junior Andy Miedema (Unity Christian), senior Adam
Marcionetti (Oak Park, IL) and junior Matt Schmitz (Ionia) also served time on
the mound for the Knights with Marcionetti throwing two innings of shutout ball
late in the contest.
Calvin will open a three-game weekend homestand with a single game Friday
against MIAA foe Olivet at 3:00 pm. Friday's game will be the MIAA opener for
both teams. The schools will close out the series with a doubleheader slated to
start at 1:00 pm Saturday afternoon.
WOMEN'S TENNIS
Calvin opened its MIAA campaign with a 7-2 loss to Albion Wednesday afternoon
in Grand Rapids as the visiting Britons took five of the six singles flights and
two of the three doubles flights. Senior Anne Koldenhoven (Burr Ridge, IL) was
the only singles winner for Calvin, winning a two-set match at number-four
singles while senior Kait Disselkoen (Nairobi, Kenya) and sophomore Sally
Skodinski (South Bend, IN) team up for a three-set win at number-one singles.
The Knights will host Alma Saturday at 1:00 pm.
