SOFTBALL
Calvin opened its 2001 campaign by splitting a pair of games Tuesday
evening in Fort Myers, Florida. Calvin opened the evening with an 8-7
victory over Hamline (MN) and then fell 8-2 to Massachusetts College.
Freshman Keri Cole (Fountain) went the distance in gaining the victory
over Hamline as she struck out three and walked two.
Senior Erin Dyksterhouse (Kalamazoo Christian) collected the key blow
for the Knights as she cracked a two-run homer in the bottom of the
sixth to put the Knights on top 8-7. Dyksterhouse, senior Rhonda Volkers
(Holland Christian), junior Susannah Knust (Grandville) and freshman
Tricia Balkema (Highland, IN) collected two hits apiece to lead a 12-hit
Calvin attack.
Against Massachusetts College, Calvin saw a 2-0 lead disappear as
Massachusetts scored three times in the second inning and added another
three-run inning in the sixth. Sophomore Erin Osgerby (Caledonia) took
the loss for Calvin, striking out one and walking three. Sophomore Becky
Austen (Pembroke, ON) collected a double for Calvin's lone extra-base
hit.
BASEBALL
Calvin opened its 2001 season with a pair of defeats, falling 5-3 to
Rowan (NJ) in extra innings and then dropping an 11-5 decision to
Macalester (MN) Tuesday afternoon in Fort Myers. Junior Mike Ott (Union)
threw five innings of no-hit ball before giving way to senior Ryan
Wolthuis (South Christian) in the sixth.
Rowan proceeded to score three times in the top of the sixth to take a
3-1 lead. Calvin came back to tie the game with a pair of runs in the
bottom half of the inning but would not score again as Rowan scored
twice in the top of the eighth to gain the win. Wolthuis took the loss
for Calvin in relief while the Knights collected six hits on offense
with junior Ben Dykhouse (Grand Rapids Christin) igniting the attacking
with a solo homerun in the fifth.
In its loss to Macalester, Calvin saw its hopes of victory dashed in the
second inning as Macalester scored seven times to take a 9-1 lead.
