    MEN'S SWIMMING

    BUFFALO, NY -- The Calvin men's swim concluded competition at the NCAA
    III Championships in strong fashion, posting a pair of honorable mention
    All-America performances to garner its first-ever top-20 national finish
    as the Knights finished 18th with 52 points.

    The performance by the Calvin men came on the heels of the Calvin
    women's swim team finishing 19th the weekend before at the NCAA III
    Championships which also marked the first-ever top-20 national finish
    for the Calvin women.

    On Saturday, Calvin freshman Brad White shattered his own school record
    in the 100 freestyle as he earned honorable mention All-America honors
    with a 11th place time of 46.34.

    White then joined sophomore A.J. Penninga (Grand Rapids Christian) and
    juniors Chris Veltman (Duarte, CA) and Jordan Zacharia (Annondale, VA)
    in the 400 freestyle relay to record a 10th place finish in a time of
    3:07.59. The finish was an honorable mention All-America performance
    and allowed the Knights to move up three spots from their seed time
    where they were seeded 13th.

    "We're real happy with our performances this weekend,' said Calvin swim
    coach Dan Gelderloos. "We wanted to finish the meet out strong and we
    did that. To be in the top-20 for the first time is another noteworthy
    accomplishment for our guys. I'm very proud of them."

    MEN'S AND WOMEN'S TRACK AND FIELD

    AUBURN, IN -- The Calvin men's and women's track and field teams opened
    their outdoor compaigns Saturday afternoon at the Auburn Springtime
    Invitational and recorded several NCAA III qualifying performances in
    the process.

    In the women's competition, senior Megan Pierce (Fort Wayne, IN) and
    junior Lindsay Mulder (Calvin Christian) both came up with NCAA III
    automatic qualifying efforts as Pierce recorded an automatic time of
    4.88 in the 400 meters while Mulder recorded an automatic qualifying
    leap of 18-6 1/2 in the long jump. In addition, Mulder and Pierce were
    both members of Calvin relay teams that posted NCAA III provisional
    qualifying times. In the 400 meter relay, Pierce and Mulder joined
    junior Rachel Veltkamp (Grand Rapids Christian), freshman Dana Haan
    (Lynden, WA) for a provisional qualifying time of 48.53. in the 4 x 400
    meter relay, Pierce and Mulder combined with junior Mindy Worst and
    senior Sara Veltkamp (Grand Rapids Christian) for a provisional
    qualifying time of 3:54.54.

    Other strong individual efforts by the Calvin women included freshman
    Jamie Febo in the discus (129-9); sophomore Liz Frens (Grand Rapids
    Christian) in the shot put (38-2 3/4) and Sara Veltkamp in the 800
    meters (2:19.04).

    On the men's side, Calvin had a number of NCAA III provisional
    qualifying performances led by a pair of runners who accomplished the
    feat in the 5,000 meters. Posting provisional qualifying times in the
    5,000 meters were juniors Justin Momany-Pfruender (Midland) and Dan
    Hoekstra (Kalamazoo Christian) with respective times of 14:51.07 and
    14:52.80 while senior Paul Petersen (Crawfordsville, IN) missed a
    provisional qualifying time by five-hundreths of a second as he clocked
    in at 14:57.09.

    The Knights also received a pair of provisional qualifying performances
    in the field events as senior Derek Kleinheksel (Hamilton) went 6-8 in
    the high jump while senior Mark DeWeerd (Unity Christian) went 15-3 in
    the pole vault.

    Other notable performances for the Calvi men included senior Eric Hansen
    (Big Rapids) in the 400 meter hurdles (55.35) and senior Phil Sikkenga
    (Wheaton, IL) in the 400 meters (48.76).

    Both Calvin teams will train this week in Gulf Shores, Alabama and then
    compete at an invitational hosted by Emory University next Saturday on
    the way back to Michigan.
