WOMEN'S SWIMMING
BUFFALO, NY - Calvin closed out competition at the NCAA III
Championships by recording its first-ever top-20 team finish as the
Knights used an 11th place finish by its 400 freestyle relay team of
juniors Erin Kloostra (Grand Rapids Christian), Kate Conrad (Calvin
Christian) and sophomores Katie Nagelkirk (Holland Christian) and Anne
Kuiper (Houghton) to finish 19th in the final overall standings with a
team score of 42 points.
Calvin advanced to the consolation finals in the 400 freestyle relay
with a time of 3:35.51 in the prelims Saturday morning. The Knights
then posted a time of 3:35.20 in the consolation finals Saturday
evening.
Nagelkirk also competed in the 100 freestyle preliminaries Saturday
morning but did not advance to the finals as her time of 53.94 placed
her 27th overall.
"I'm really proud of our women. They hung tough today," said Calvin
women's swim coach Dan Gelderloos. "We're very excited about our first
top-20 finish. We hope to be back again next year and improve upon that
finish."
Denison captured the national team championship with 588 points, edging
17-time defending national champion Kenyon which finished second with
572 points. Denison had finished as national runner-up the last three
years.
