    WOMEN'S SWIMMING

BUFFALO, NY - Calvin opened the first day of competition at the NCAA III
Championships by posting the second All-America relay performance in
school history as its 200 freestyle relay team of sophomore Katie
Nagelkirk (Holland Christian), sophomore Anne Kuiper (Houhgton), junior
Kate Conrad (Calvin Christian) and junior Erin Kloostra (Grand Rapids
Christian) took seventh place with a time of 1:38.19. Calvin's relay
team advanced to Thursday's championship finals with a time of 1:37.61
    in the morning preliminaries.

The seventh place performance is the best finish by a Calvin relay team
at the NCAA III Championships. It joins Calvin's eighth place
performance in the 400 freestyle relay at the 1999 NCAA III
Championships. Kloostra and Conrad were both members of Calvin's 400
freestyle relay team in 1999 as freshmen.

"I'm absolutely thrilled for our women," said Calvin swim coach Dan
Gelderloos. "They were very focused in the morning preliminaries and
came through with a great qualifying performance to get to tonight's
finals. We're hoping to use this momentum for the next two days."

Nagelkirk and Kloostra also competed in the preliminaries of the 50
freestyle Thursday morning but did not advance to the championship
finals as Nagelkirk was 27th (24.88) and Kloostra 35th (24.99).

The performance by Calvin's 200 freestyle relay team put the Knights in
    16th place with 24 points.

Kloostra, Conrad, Kuiper and Nagelkirk will compete in the 800 freestyle
    Friday.

Denison leads the competition after one day of competition with 189
points. Denison sophomore Kate Flikkema of Grand Rapids Christian High
School helped stake the Big Red to the first day lead as she was a
member of Denison's 200 freestyle relay team and 400 medley relay teams
that captured national championships with respective times of 1:33.71
and 3:46.11. Flikkema also captured the consolation heat of the 50
    freestyle with a ninth-place time of 24.08.

    MEN'S TENNIS

Calvin dropped to 1-2 overall and to 0-1 in the MIAA as the Knights
dropped their conference opener, falling 9-0 at Albion Thursday
    afternoon.

The Britons captured four set tie-breakers to pull away for Thursday's
win. Calvin returns to action next Tuesday when it hosts Aquinas at
    3:00 pm.
